World champion Sebastien Loeb leads the opening round of the WRC season in Monte Carlo, after main rival Jari Matti Latvala rolled in SS4.
Latvala had been leading Loeb by half a minute, until he rolled his Ford Fiesta early on during the final stage of the day.
Dani Sordo lies in second, over a minute behind Loeb and he was one of many to hit problems on the opening day.
Sordo damaged his suspension after an error on SS2, while Petter Solberg rued using snow tyres on a largely dry stage. Citroen new boy Mikko Hirvonen also suffered after damaging his brakes after a collision with a wall.
Thierry Neuville was the only other high profile retirement after a technical problem on SS4. Neither Neuville nor Latvala can continue the rally.
