Button to replace Alonso in Monaco

McLaren-Honda confirmed that Jenson Button will be racing for the team at the 2017 Monaco Grand Prix. The Brit returns to Formula 1 just few months after his retirement from the sport to replace Fernando Alonso, who will be missing the race due to other commitments. The Spaniard will compete with McLaren-Honda-Andretti over the weekend of the Indianapolis 500, which will take place on the same date (May 28th) as the Monaco Grand Prix. Alonso will return to Formula 1 duties from the Canadian Grand Prix onwards, and […]

Alonso: It will be an endurance race

Fernando Alonso has predicted that the Monaco Grand Prix will be an 'endurance' race due to the hard nature of the Pirelli tyres. For the fourth successive year Pirelli has taken the supersoft and soft tyres to Monte Carlo, but their 2014 compounds are harder than their 2013 counterparts, with several drivers complaining that they are an issue. "Today’s result encapsulates the state of play this weekend and it’s more or less what we expected, but I don’t think it went badly, because we managed […]

Vettel hindered by electrical issues

Sebastian Vettel says that an ERS problem hindered his progress during qualifying for the Monaco Grand Prix. The reigning world champion set the fourth quickest time in Q3 but reckons his Red Bull RB10 was not at its optimum potential throughout the session. "I had some problems in qualifying today," he said. "Somewhere in Q1 we lost ERS, so basically the electric power to discharge the car and we didn’t get it back. "In the end we ran a different mode which was fine, but […]

Kvyat reprimanded for Maldonado block

Toro Rosso driver Daniil Kvyat has collected his first reprimand of the season after impeding Lotus's Pastor Maldonado during qualifying. The stewards deemed that the Russian held up Maldonado at turn 19 during the opening qualifying session. Both drivers made it through to Q2, with Kvyat eventually progressing through to the top 10 shootout. The 20-year-old, making his first appearance in Monaco, wiped the front nose off of his STR9 when he made a mistake under braking at the Nouvelle Chicane in Q1. "This was […]

Hamilton tops close final practice in Monaco

Lewis Hamilton set the quickest time during the final free practice session ahead of qualifying for the Monaco Grand Prix. The Brit set a time of 1:16.758 on option tyres to edge out Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo by 0.050s. Nico Rosberg led the way early in the session on prime tyres, with the Mercedes drivers enjoying a comfortable advantage over their Red Bull rivals. But on options, the RB10s were much closer - with Rosberg having to settle for third, ahead of Sebastian Vettel, who […]

Hamilton: I'm hungrier than Rosberg

Lewis Hamilton claims that he is hungrier than team-mate Nico Rosberg as the duo continue their battle for the 2014 title in Monaco. Hamilton, who has won the last four races, leads the title race by three points over his Mercedes team-mate after the opening five rounds of the year. "Let me tell you this: I come from a not-great place in Stevenage and lived on a couch in my dad’s apartment - and Nico grew up in Monaco with jets and hotels and boats […]

Vergne sure Toro Rosso has Q3 package

Jean-Eric Vergne says he is confident that Toro Rosso can fight for the top 10 in qualifying on Saturday. Vergne was fourth quickest during a rain-affected second practice session and believes that the pace of the STR9 is sufficient for the team to be able to progress through to the final shootout. "It was a good day, I think the car is better than expected and it gives us confidence about the car and about myself, so we of course do not expect to finish […]

Ricciardo: This is the one place we can challenge Mercedes

Daniel Ricciardo believes that this weekend's Monaco Grand Prix presents Red Bull with their best opportunity to topple dominant team Mercedes. Mercedes has romped to five consecutive pole positions and victories in 2014 to open up a comfortable lead in the championship, but Ricciardo believes that the streets of Monte Carlo could aid Red Bull's challenge. Ricciardo was ninth fastest during the disrupted second practice session, having been Mercedes's closest challenger during the normal morning session. "It was a shame we didn’t run so much […]

Sutil: C33 still needs improving

Adrian Sutil says that the driveability of the Sauber C33 still requires improvement ahead of this weekend's Monaco Grand Prix. Sutil was 13th quickest during the second free practice session but crashed out of the first session after losing control at Mirabeau. "At the end of FP2, we were able to run a few laps on supersoft tyres, which worked out well," he said. "The car’s balance is decent. In general, we still have issues which we need to solve. The driveability needs to be […]

Kobayashi: No point risking damage

Kamui Kobayashi says there was no reason for Caterham to run during the first part of second practice and risk damaging the CT05. Kobayashi was one of several drivers to remain in the garage due to heavy rain falling during the lunch break in Monte Carlo. The Japanese driver eventually emerged out onto the circuit for the final 10 minutes of the session, once it was possible for option tyres to be used. "Like a few of the other teams we waited to start our […]

Hulkenberg pleased with positive day

Nico Hulkenberg labelled his start to the Monaco Grand Prix weekend as 'positive' after setting the seventh fastest time during second practice in Monaco. Hulkenberg remained in the garage for much of the 90 minute session but emerged from the pits on option tyres and led the times for a brief period, before dropping to seventh. "The car is okay," he said. "Generally we’re in the ballpark in terms of set-up – there’s the usual tweaks but it’s been a positive day. "We only ran […]
