Concerns raised over starting procedure

Formula 1 race director Charlie Whiting has admitted that there are added concerns about the start procedure at this weekend's Australian Grand Prix. Several teams have struggled to complete practice starts during pre-season testing and Whiting concedes that there is a high potential for stalled cars at the start of the forthcoming race. "I've been told that some cars haven't actually done a practice start yet," Whiting said ahead of this weekend's curtain raiser. "I'm sure they'll be doing lots here at the pit exit, […]

There are five options available: F14 T, F14 Maranello, F14 Scuderia, F166 Turbo or F616, with voting set to get underway on Ferrari's website and official social media pages. Lopez plays down Lotus collapse fears

Lotus owner Gerard Lopez has moved to allay fears the Enstone based team is on the verge of collapse. When the FIA issued the official 2014 entry list recently, Lotus' place was marked with a conspicuous asterisk, fuelling rumours of financial doom. "We just had the wrong team name on the list, namely the one of two years ago," Lopez told Germany's Auto Motor und Sport on Wednesday. "I can assure you -- everything is still the same." Despite the reassurance, however, many wonder if […]

Hulkenberg: Never before has there been a situation like this

Nico Hulkenberg believes that Formula 1 has never faced such uncertainty ahead of the start of the new season. Hulkenberg returns to Force India this year and reckons that the rule changes - which include the introduction of 1.6 litre v6 power units - means that no-one can be sure of the pecking order ahead of the first test at Jerez in two weeks' time. "At the moment, nobody knows how this season and the new cars are going to be," he said. "There are […]

Sutil: Switch to Sauber a 'refreshing change'

Adrian Sutil says that switching to Sauber is a 'refreshing change' after almost eight years with Force India. Sutil joined Force India under a previous guise, Midland, in 2006 and graduated to a race seat when Spyker took over the team in 2007. The German remained with the squad when it developed into Force India and only missed out on a race seat in 2012. "It's a refreshing change. I had a good time with Force India for many years," he said at AUTOSPORT International […]

Conflicting fortunes for race organisers

Formula 1 will return to Austria and head to Russia in 2014. But for New Jersey, the situation is somewhat cloudier. A new season is slowly creeping over the horizon, with Formula 1’s workforce frantically preparing the new breed of machines that will hit the track in Jerez in three weeks’ time. There will be conflicting fortunes: someone has to finish top of the class and another will end up with the wooden spoon. But for now, there is some anxious work ongoing. It’s a […]

Lauda says Mercedes 'ready' for 2014 challenge

Niki Lauda says Mercedes is on track for the start of official 2014 testing, despite the huge challenge of the all-new turbo rules. Germany's Auto Motor und Sport reports rumours that world champion team Red Bull's boss Christian Horner had floated the idea of delaying for a week the start of winter testing late this month. "Nothing is being moved," Mercedes team chairman Lauda insisted. "The plans are going ahead for late January. "The task of big for everybody." The report said the German squad […]

Ferrari on track for late January launch

Ferrari is edging close to having its 2014 car ready for the start of winter testing. Reports in the Marca sports newspaper (Spain) and the authoritative Autosprint (Italy) say the Maranello-built single seater is set to be launched on either the 23rd, 24th or 25th of January, a few days ahead of the opening test at Jerez. Marca correspondent Marco Canseco said the car, whose official name will be decided by fans via an internet poll, will "almost certainly" undergo its mandatory FIA crash tests […]

Ferrari president: Raikkonen and Alonso 'could be dangerous'

Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo has conceded that pairing Kimi Raikkonen with Fernando Alonso for the 2014 season 'could be dangerous'. Ferrari has altered its driver line-up for the first time since the start of 2010 as Raikkonen returns to the team with which he won the 2007 championship, replacing Felipe Massa. Alonso has enjoyed priority over Massa since 2010 and, with Raikkonen also a world champion, Di Montezemolo admits that it is a risky strategy for Ferrari. "Putting together Alonso and Raikkonen could be […]

Alonso admits 2013 not best season as driver

Fernando Alonso has acknowledged he did not perform as strongly in 2013 as he did the previous year. Recently, the Spanish sports daily AS conducted a survey among Alonso's driver rivals asking them to say whether they thought the Ferrari driver or the quadruple world champion Sebastian Vettel was the best driver of 2013. The Spaniard came out on top. "It's always good to know that you are recognised by your peers," Alonso responded, "but I think 2012 was the best in my career. "This […]

Gutierrez completes Sauber 2014 line-up

Mexican Esteban Gutierrez will race with Swiss-based Sauber for a second season next year with Russian teenager Sergey Sirotkin signed as test driver, the Formula One team announced on Saturday. Gutierrez will partner experienced German driver Adrian Sutil, who has moved from Force India to replace Nico Hulkenberg in a direct switch with his compatriot. Sauber also announced the continuation of their sponsorship agreement with Mexican telephone company Telmex, who have backed the racing careers of both Gutierrez and compatriot Sergio Perez. Double points could be scrapped, says Montezemolo

Formula One's decision to award double points at the last race of the season could be scrapped after next year's Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, if not before, according to Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo. The Italian told reporters attending a Christmas lunch at the Fiorano test track that he was no fan of the controversial rule change that has got fans up in arms and been branded 'absurd' by Red Bull's world champion Sebastian Vettel. "I am not enthusiastic about it, because for me it […]
