Mercedes boss Toto Wolff says that both Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg suffered from brake problems during the closing stages of the Bahrain Grand Prix.

Hamilton lost several seconds as he backed off on the final lap on his way to victory while Rosberg went wide at the first corner and conceded second position to Kimi Raikkonen.

"[It's a] huge relief as both cars lost brake-by-wire one and a half laps to the end and that leaves you unable to defend, shame for Nico as he had a sensational race with great overtaking," Wolff told BBC Sport.

"First and third is something we can be satisfied with. We had overheating problems, [the] brakes ran hot all race on both cars, when it reaches a certain limit it switches to conventional [settings].

"We monitored it during the race and we knew it was in a critical race, the moment you get behind cars it gets too hot and it just collapses."

Wolff says that Mercedes remains wary of the progress made by Ferrari.

"They have been definitely catching up but we will do all we can to beat them," he added.
