Sebastian Vettel says that he remains hopeful of challenging Mercedes in race trim, despite Ferrari's rivals locking out the front row of the grid for the Austrian Grand Prix.

Vettel was third quickest at the Red Bull Ring as Lewis Hamilton beat Nico Rosberg to pole position.

"Unfortunately they were a bit too quick, we tried everything, [it] looked good in practice," he explained.

"Q1 was tricky for all of us, we set into the groove nicely, last part I guess generally the Mercedes powered cars seem to turn up the performance, you look at those two guys, Williams was closer than in practice, [there is] some work for us to do, overall [I'm] happy in third but would love to be a bit closer, we should have a good car in the race.

"We are always ready, always fight and wait for our chances, so far it has been difficult as they’ve been bloody quick but hopefully we can be closer, we are ready to attack and try our best."
