Sebastian Vettel declared himself "very happy" with his final Q3 effort as he secured third place on the grid for the Canadian Grand Prix.
Vettel clocked a time of 1:12.990 to end qualifying as the only non-Mercedes driver to dip below the 1:13s mark, as he finished within two-tenths of a second of pole sitter Lewis Hamilton.
"I think going into qualifying I thought it was possible," Vettel said when asked whether pole position was on his mind.
"As a driver you always feel there’s a little bit more. On my last lap I was very happy in general, but maybe a bit greedy out of Turn 10, not greedy enough into Turn 6.
"But there wasn’t a lot to grab otherwise. I wanted to get below the 1:13s mark as I knew it would be very close with Mercedes.
"I did that but missed out by one hundredth, so that little bit was missing.
"Overall I think we have a great car, we did a step [forward] so I’m happy with how the weekend has turned out. I feel in general very comfortable and enjoyed qualifying."
