Toro Rosso’s Daniil Kvyat set the fastest time on the second morning of the third in-season test at Silverstone.
Kvyat’s time of 1:35.544 put him almost a second clear of McLaren driver Kevin Magnussen.
Jules Bianchi switched from Marussia and Ferrari and set the third quickest time, ahead of regular team-mate Max Chilton.
Force India reserve driver Daniel Juncadella, who took part in free practice last week, was fifth.
Valtteri Bottas was sixth, ahead of Giedo van der Garde - the most productive driver with 54 laps completed - and Sebastian Vettel, who conducted tyre testing with Pirelli.
Pirelli unveiled its 18 inch concept tyre, which the Italian company could supply to Formula 1 in the future.
The sport currently uses 13 inch tyres but Pirelli has produced a concept tyre to demonstrate what 18 inch tyres would look like on a Formula 1 machine.
The tyres were unveiled in the pit lane before Charles Pic took to the track in the Lotus E22. The Frenchman was nine seconds off the pace after completing just a handful of laps.
Lewis Hamilton did not set a timed lap after spinning off on cold tyres at Stowe early on, which brought out the red flags, while Julian Leal’s Formula 1 debut with Caterham lasted just a solitary lap.
Leal’s CT05 stopped at the pit entry with an electrical problem and Caterham is still repairing the fault.
