Button: Signing Magnussen a 'massive risk'

Jenson Button says that McLaren's signing of Formula Renault 3.5 Series champion Kevin Magnussen is a 'massive risk'. McLaren confirmed ahead of this weekend's United States Grand Prix that Magnussen will make his debut for the team in 2014, alongside Button. "It's a situation that could light up your career or put an end to it early if it doesn't go well," Button said. "It's a massive risk for a driver to jump in at the deep end with a team that should be fighting […]

Great Dane: Kevin Magnussen's rise to Formula 1

The news that Kevin Magnussen will replace Sergio Pérez at McLaren in 2014 had been expected, but it’s nonetheless a bold gamble from a team aiming to return to the front next season. McLaren’s attempts to place Magnussen at Marussia or perhaps Force India for his rookie campaign – as Ferrari has done with Jules Bianchi – were ultimately fruitless. Rather than let Magnussen sit on the pit wall for a year, McLaren took the decision to promote Magnussen at the expense of Pérez. Considering […]

Maldonado 'very happy' to leave Williams

Pastor Maldonado says he is 'very happy' at the prospect of leaving Williams, believing that he delivered more to the team than they did for him. Williams confirmed on Monday that Felipe Massa and Valtteri Bottas will race for the team in 2014, ending their three year association with Maldonado. Maldonado won the Spanish Grand Prix for the team last year, but in both 2011 and 2013 the Venezuelan has scored just a single point. "I am very happy," he said. "Since a couple of […]

United States Grand PrixView

Formula 1 returns to the United States of America for the penultimate round of the 2013 season, at the Circuit of the Americas near Austin, Texas, with Sebastian Vettel seeking his eighth successive victory. It’s safe to say that the 2013 season is ending with a whimper rather than a bang but while attention is turning to 2014, there are still two races to run this year and they both take place at fabulous circuits. The first of the final back-to-back events of 2013 takes […]

The silly season gets sillier, but something will soon give way

So Kevin Magnussen has been confirmed at McLaren for 2014, alongside Jenson Button. Got that? Good. Because it’s not true. Well, not yet anyway. Several leading sources have suggested that Magnussen is in at McLaren, with Pérez – the supposed saviour 12 months ago – left out of a drive at Woking. But the deal between pen and paper has not yet been signed, sealed and delivered. Until an email from McLaren arrives confirming their 2014 line-up, it remains speculation, however strong the sources. This […]
