McLaren's Street Struggle

Fifth place for Lewis Hamilton and a DNF for Jenson Button saw McLaren slip further behind Red Bull Racing at the top of the Constructors’ Championship. Red Bull Racing now lead McLaren by 38 points, having added 37 in Monaco with victory for Mark Webber and a fighting fourth place for Sebastian Vettel. Hamilton trailed Vettel home in fifth, and Button, after a torrid afternoon, retired in the closing stages. Hamilton did not get off the line well but managed to retain his third position […]

Button fastest at moist Monaco

Jenson Button set the fastest time in second practice ahead of this weekend's Monaco Grand Prix. The 2009 world champion set his time of 1.15.746 on option tyres early on in the session. A brief shower after fifteen minutes left the circuit damp, although a couple of drivers ventured out on dry tyres. The rain intensified and the drivers were forced to switch to the Intermediate tyres. On an unusually error free practice day around the streets of Monte Carlo, most of the action came […]

FP1 ends early after Kovalainen smokes up Monaco

Free Practice One for the Monaco Grand Prix was brought to a premature end following a spectacular engine failure for Heikki Kovalainen. With seven minutes remaining, the Caterham driver entered the tunnel as his Renault engine failed, filling the tunnel with smoke before coming to a halt on the racing line exiting Monaco's famous landmark. Due to the extent of the smoke and the possibility of oil laid down, the decision was taken not to restart the session. Before the stoppage, Fernando Alonso had set […]

Marussia thinking seriously about KERS

Marussia needs a KERS system to catch up with its direct rivals. That is the admission of team boss John Booth, who told the Russian website championat.com that he is looking into adding the energy recovery technology to next year's Marussia package. "First of all, I want to say that while it is said it (KERS) is a 'green' technology, in reality it's just a serious waste of money," he said. "But in our situation it's time to start thinking seriously about KERS. Of the […]

Kovalainen wants midfield push for Caterham says manager

Heikki Kovalainen is looking for Caterham to move into the midfield, according to his new management company. Having handled his own career in the wake of Flavio Briatore's demise, Finn Kovalainen recently signed up with IMG, the sports and entertainment management giant. The 30-year-old has rebuilt his reputation since 2010 in the wake of mixed tenures for top teams Renault and McLaren. According to IMG Motorsport's head of clients Martin Anayi, Kovalainen is now regarded by Formula One team bosses up and down pitlane as […]

Petrov: Lotus relations turned sour

Vitaly Petrov has revealed he lost his seat at the Renault team, which is now known as Lotus, following disagreements with key team members. For 2012, the Russian has had to switch to Caterham, a F1 backmarker. In the meantime, with an all-new driver lineup comprising former world champion Kimi Raikkonen alongside Romain Grosjean, Lotus has stepped up a gear and is now among the sport's most highly competitive teams. "What happened last year was a shame, but at the end of the season relations […]

Massa could lose seat during August break says Petrov

Vitaly Petrov thinks it is possible Felipe Massa will lose his Ferrari seat long before the 2012 season is over. But Caterham's Russian driver, who moved from Renault (now Lotus) at the end of last season, does not believe reports that Ferrari could sack the struggling Brazilian imminently, such as after next weekend's Monaco grand prix. "I don't think they'll fire Massa just now. At least not until August," Petrov is quoted by the state owned Moscow news agency Ria Novosti. There are six races […]

Williams suffers post-race fire

Not long after Pastor Maldonado had claimed victory for Williams in the Spanish Grand Prix, a fire broke out in team’s garage at the Circuit de Catalunya. The blaze was brought under control by members of the Williams, Caterham and Force India teams, aided circuit fire servies. An FIA statement read: “Thirty-one team members were seen by Circuit Medical Centre staff and all have been released, with the exception of seven who were transferred to a variety of local hospitals where they are receiving treatment.” […]

Huge fire breaks out in Williams garage

The drama stepped up a notch even after the chequered flag in Barcelona. A couple of hours after Williams' first win since 2004, something exploded in the British team's garage, triggering a major fire. Team members and fire crews battled the blaze as paddock regulars scrambled away from the heavy smoke and police arrived on the scene. The Telegraph's Tom Cary said on Twitter there are "multiple injuries". It is believed Williams, Force India and Caterham staff - some of whom bravely fought the fire […]

Alonso tops FP1 timesheet in Spain

Fernando Alonso set the early pace in Barcelona this morning, the local favourite topping the FP1 timesheet with a time of 1:24.430, just under four tenths of a second clear of Sebastian Vettel and almost five ahead of third-placed Kamui Kobayashi. Kobayashi headed the timesheet for a long spell at the beginning of the session but was eventually eclipsed by Vettel. The German’s time at the top wasn’t long, however, and 20 minutes before the end of the session Alonso jumped to the head of […]

Webber hits back at Petrov's Mugello jibe

Mark Webber has hit out at F1 rival Vitaly Petrov. Last week, as the sport tested at Mugello, Russian driver Petrov suggested the high speed Ferrari-owned layout is too dangerous for modern grand prix cars. "You get very close to the walls and it's maybe a bit small for the cars now," said the Caterham driver. Australian Webber, however, had raved about Mugello, likening 10 laps there as akin to 1000 tours of Abu Dhabi's heavily-criticised Yas Marina layout. Posting a photo on Twitter of […]
