FP1 ends early after Kovalainen smokes up Monaco

By on Thursday, May 24, 2012

Free Practice One for the Monaco Grand Prix was brought to a premature end following a spectacular engine failure for Heikki Kovalainen.

With seven minutes remaining, the Caterham driver entered the tunnel as his Renault engine failed, filling the tunnel with smoke before coming to a halt on the racing line exiting Monaco's famous landmark. Due to the extent of the smoke and the possibility of oil laid down, the decision was taken not to restart the session.

Before the stoppage, Fernando Alonso had set the fastest lap time in his Ferrari. Team mate Felipe Massa was the only driver to hit the wall, although it was only a minor brush as he entered Tabac, his car undamaged.

Romain Grosjean was impressive in his Lotus E20 but team mate Kimi Raikkonen missed the session after a problem with his steering.
