Horner says Renault 75hp down on Mercedes

Christian Horner has put an alarming horse power figure on Renault's deficit to dominant Mercedes in 2014. "Our engine has 75 horse power less than the Mercedes," he declared to the Italian publication Autosprint. A big argument is taking place at present between struggling Renault - Red Bull's works supplier - and F1's other engine marques Ferrari and Mercedes. Renault and Ferrari are pushing hard for the so-called engine development 'freeze' to be relaxed, but Mercedes is understandably resisting. "If you look at the speed […]

Horner says third car 'too expensive' for Red Bull

Red Bull Team Principal Christian Horner says that the outfit would be unable to run a third car within its existing budget. The concept of three-car teams has been a prevalent theme since the demise of Marussia and Caterham, with reports across the Brazilian Grand Prix suggesting that a couple of front running teams could run three cars in 2015, as per their contractual agreements with the commercial rights holder. But Horner says that he would prefer to see a healthy grid of teams each […]

'Start of new cycle' for Red Bull - Horner

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner says 2015 will be the start of a new cycle for his squad following the announcement that Sebastian Vettel will leave the reigning champions at the end of the season. Vettel is expected to join Ferrari for 2015 with his place at Red Bull taken by current Toro Rosso youngster Daniil Kvyat. "Sebastian informed us of his decision last night," said Horner. "It was emotional, but we can look back fondly. "I know him well on and off track […]

Red Bull never considered Alonso as Vettel replacement

Red Bull says it never considered Fernando Alonso as a candidate for its 2015 seat after Sebastian Vettel announced his intention to leave the reigning world champions. Red Bull and Vettel will part company at the end of the season, with the German expected to go to Ferrari to replace McLaren-bound Alonso. Red Bull has also confirmed that Daniil Kvyat will step into Vettel's seat and team principal Christian Horner says Alonso was not a candidate. "Fernando is a wonderful driver, but our philosophy is […]

No team orders as Ricciardo title unlikely admits Horner

Christian Horner has all but written off Daniel Ricciardo's chances of beating the Mercedes drivers to the 2014 title. Amid his impressive first campaign for Red Bull, Australian Ricciardo is undoubtedly the only real non-silver challenger for the drivers' world championship. In third place, he is 48 points clear of Ferrari's Fernando Alonso, and 57 points ahead of his own teammate, the reigning world champion Sebastian Vettel. But Vettel finished just ahead of Ricciardo under the Singapore lights, despite the Australian having called for team […]

Horner pleased with damage limitation

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner says that his squad's fifth and sixth place finish at the Italian Grand Prix was the maximum result possible. At a circuit where Mercedes-powered cars dominated, Daniel Ricciardo and Sebastian Vettel finished fifth and sixth respectively, with Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen in ninth being the only other non-Mercedes driver to score a point. "I think fifth and sixth was the absolute optimum today," he said. "We picked two different strategies, an aggressive one with Sebastian to undercut the McLaren, which […]

Vettel tired after dominant run in F1 says Horner

Part of Sebastian Vettel's problem in 2014 is that he is 'worn out', Red Bull team boss Christian Horner has revealed. Having utterly dominated the sport, culminating in his four consecutive drivers' titles between 2010 and last year, the 27-year-old German has struggled for form this season. Some think that following Mark Webber's departure, his new Australian teammate Daniel Ricciardo is simply putting Vettel in the shade. Ricciardo, having graduated from the junior team Toro Rosso, is 6-5 up Vettel in qualifying, and with a […]

Red Bull praises 'mature' Vettel

Sebastian Vettel has dealt with his 2014 setbacks in a 'remarkably mature' fashion, according to Red Bull team principal Christian Horner. The reigning world champion has retired from three of the eight races in 2014 and currently sits in fifth place in the championship, 105 points behind title leader Nico Rosberg. "Sebastian’s been remarkably mature about it to be honest with you," he said of Vettel's response to his 2014 issues. "Not shallow in any way or spitting his dummy or throwing the toys out. […]

Horner: Renault six months behind Mercedes

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner believes that engine supplier Renault is roughly six months behind the development curve compared to rivals Mercedes - and insists the outfit has options for 2016. Rumours have circulated in the paddock across the last few weeks that the reigning champions are considering ditching Renault once the current contract ends in 2015 - a rumour which Horner did not deny on Tuesday. "The thing about a team like Red Bull is we always have options, and I'm not going […]

Horner backs Vettel to 'come back'

Christian Horner has backed Sebastian Vettel, amid suggestions the four time world champion could be losing the support of the Red Bull team. Typically-forthright 1997 world champion Jacques Villeneuve this week said he thinks that, amid Vettel's struggle to keep up with new teammate Daniel Ricciardo this year, "Red Bull is treating him like they treated Mark Webber". "Now they want to 'kill' Sebastian because he's not right for the Red Bull image," said the French Canadian, amid rumours McLaren has made an early approach […]

Horner urges Renault to improve performance

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has urged engine supplier Renault to improve their performance after a disappointing result at the Austrian Grand Prix. Daniel Ricciardo came home in eighth place while Sebastian Vettel's RB10 suffered a power unit problem on the second lap of the race. Vettel was able to get going after his issue but he lost a full lap, eventually retiring from the race mid-distance. His third retirement leaves him over 100 points behind championship leader Nico Rosberg. "We’ve had another issue […]
