Caterham link hints at Renault switch for HRT

Cosworth could be left with just a single Formula 1 customer next year, if the latest rumblings from the rumour mill turn out to be true. It was reported at the end of last month that HRT, the struggling Spanish team, is set to begin working with a Cologne company co-owned by Tony Fernandes and Mike Gascoyne. Fernandes and Gascoyne, best known for heading the Team Lotus/Caterham team, reportedly now also own "the design office of the former Toyota team", according to the BBC in […]

Head: Maldonado seat 'pretty certain' for 2012

Team co-founder Patrick Head is "pretty certain" Pastor Maldonado will stay with Williams for a second season in 2012. The Venezuelan's seat was until recently considered secure due to his lucrative backing by the state-owned oil company PDVSA. But that money is now in doubt, with the Venezuelan parliament looking into whether the Williams deal went through the necessary approval processes. So when the provisional 2012 entry list was published by the FIA on Wednesday, Maldonado's name was missing. "It's not something that I can […]

F1 'highly profitable' for engine supplier Renault

French carmaker Renault is entirely happy with its involvement in formula one, despite its name finally disappearing from the teams' entry list for 2012. The marque is now purely an engine supplier, with a close relationship with world champions Red Bull and 'customer' deals in place for 2012 with Lotus, Williams and Caterham. Renault SA's commitment as a full works team began to waver two years ago, but new chief operating officer Carlos Tavares now insists F1 is "highly profitable" for the manufacturer. "It costs […]

Security tight as F1 returns to Brazil

Attacked by armed bandits outside the circuit a year ago, Jenson Button on Thursday had trouble gaining entry to Interlagos. Express newspaper reports that even Bruno Senna, whose famous uncle Ayrton was revered by Brazilians, couldn't penetrate the tighter security in 2011. "We were saying 'We've got the FIA press conference, will you be paying our fine?'" Button told reporters on Thursday. Security is always a point of interest in Sao Paulo, with Germany's Bild newspaper amused to reveal the armoured Mercedes with bulletproof tyres […]

Mixed reaction as F1 lands in India

Formula one's travelling circus has offered a mixed reaction after touching down ahead of the first ever Indian grand prix. Tax, security and circuit construction issues made headlines many weeks ago, but a couple of drivers this week were still grumbling about the difficulty of obtaining a visa to the burgeoning south Asian country. "I had a bit of a feeling that the Indians didn't really want to see us," Virgin driver Timo Glock is quoted as saying by Germany's T-Online. "I hope the fans […]

Two DRS zones for first India GP

For only the second time in 2011, there will be two separate DRS zones in use this weekend. The debut of two independent DRS detection and activation points was at the Monza race in September. Now, Pastor Maldonado's race engineer Xevi Pujolar has revealed that there will be two separate DRS zones in India, even though the news is "not official yet". The detection zone for the first zone will be at the exit of turn 15, with chasing drivers then able to pass down […]

The Singapore GP from a tyre point of view

Singapore is the first and only night race on the Formula One calendar, using a demanding and technical street circuit that calls for Pirelli’s soft and supersoft tyres. This weekend, Sebastian Vettel has the chance to become Pirelli’s first Formula One drivers’ champion since Juan Manuel Fangio in 1957. Currently Vettel has a 112-point advantage over his closest rival: if he can extend that margin to 125 points or more by the end of the race, then he cannot be caught in the overall championship standings. […]

FIA bans DRS for Spa's Eau Rouge

Aug.23 (GMM) As reported earlier this year, the 'DRS' overtaking system will be banned completely at Spa-Francorchamps' fearsome Eau Rouge this weekend.

The BBC on Monday night reported that the governing FIA has informed the teams of the ban on safe...

World Series by Renault: a fantastic day out

Having regularly received press releases from several Formula Renault 3.5 drivers for the past season, it suddenly struck me that there was a round at Silverstone coming up. With the tickets being free – although they’re not actually tickets, they’re ‘invitations’, immediately making you feel like an important person – it seemed like a good opportunity to see some top quality racing without eye wateringly high prices. Overhead gantries warned of ‘A43 at Silverstone. Major event today. Expect delays’. That never inspires confidence however there […]

Only one 'DRS' zone for British GP - Whiting

Jul.7 (GMM) There will only be a single 'DRS' overtaking zone at Silverstone this weekend.

In Canada and again at Valencia two weeks ago, there were two overtaking zones but only a single detection point -- a system that arguably worked too well in C...
