2014 rule changes and new 'Power Units'

Post by phil1993 » 11 Jan 2013, 14:15

2013 will be the last year for engines in F1, because we have the 'Power units' in 2014.

Great read from James Allen:

Its the inevitable. I was fiercely opposing this move, but this is just the result of the enhanced technology engineers are capable of.

Won't be too long before we'll be seeing this imo:

I should clarify, I'm not opposed to the engines but will not be calling them 'power units'. :p

It's also 'ERS' not 'KERS' from 2014.

I wonder if Cosworth will be up to par with all this technology. I mean we know the big boys can handle it, but if Cosworth can't keep up, will this mean they have to leave F1?

Looks like 2013 will be the end of Cosworth's involvement in Formula 1 for the time being then (with Marussia looking to switch).

Although I've gotta say, I'm really looking forward to 2014, with these new regulations, particularly given the cars will be more unsettled- it will (hopefully) make the racing more exciting.

I'll miss Cosworth. :(

But I am looking forward to the new, eco-friendly engines.

lol. Most striking thing to me; 18inch Alloy Wheels. Exactly what Michelin requested. To say F1 is the pinnacle of technology; it bloody isn't. 13inch alloys are ancient, KERS was the last thing F1 gave to the world of motoring, but Its not been adopted by many manufacturers road cars, and the KERS that Williams developed with the flywheel is a superb piece of technology. Its like the 1.6 turbo's. Theres the TSi 1.2 and 1.4 engines which are really good.

Theres nothing for the road market anymore in Formula 1. Which is shocking really considering the pinnacle of technology needs non-lasting tyres and stalling the rear wing to even entice overtaking, so many homologated parts, no testing and no room for invention because everythings illegal. That car as beautiful as it looks, probably brakes 35 FIA technical rules for a start. Not a fan of Le mans; but that is one of the most road-relevant motorsports if not THE most relevant today.

Anyway that was off topic. Sorry for the rambling.

That's not rambling mikhailv, what you've summarized is pretty much spot on.

F1 is merely a marketing tool these days for the road market, rather than an engineering test bed as it used to be.
