Whitmarsh to step down as FOTA president

Martin Whitmarsh has flagged his intention to step down as president of the teams association FOTA. The union was created in the heat of the Max Mosley political war in 2008, with McLaren team boss Whitmarsh then taking over from FOTA's first chairman, Luca di Montezemolo, at the end of 2009. Since then, the group has fractured, with Ferrari, Red Bull, Toro Rosso, Sauber and HRT all no longer listed as members on the official FOTA website. And in a report by Dieter Rencken and […]

Kovalainen open to McLaren return

Heikki Kovalainen believes he is ready to return to a top team like McLaren. After a difficult debut season at Renault in 2007 in the wake of Fernando Alonso's departure, the now 30-year-old Finn endured an even tougher two-year tenure at McLaren -- again in Spaniard Alonso's wake. He was forced to rebuild his reputation and polish his skills right at the back of the grid, but after three seasons with a 2010 startup team, Kovalainen is reportedly now open to leaving Caterham and returning […]

Sauber not worried about 2013 driver situation

Sauber is "laid back" about its driver situation for 2013. That is the claim of chief executive Monisha Kaltenborn, despite reports Kamui Kobayashi has underperformed, Sergio Perez is on Ferrari's radar, and Caterham's Heikki Kovalainen could be joining the Swiss team next year. "We are not worried," she told F1's official website, when asked about speculation Mexican Perez could be lured to a bigger team off the back of his good performances in 2012. "Regarding the future, we are not under pressure and I am […]

Spanish driver Pedro De La Rosa has expressed his satisfaction at the gains HRT has made in 2012. HRT failed to qualify for the Australian Grand Prix and, although they sit last in the championship, have been battling Marussia. "We’ve made steady progress but now we’re at a key moment and we must take another step forward", said De La Rosa in an interview published on HRT's official website. "My assessment is very positive because we set ourselves realistic targets, we’ve accomplished them and we’re, […]

McLaren looks set to be the next team with a 'double DRS'-like system aboard its 2012 car. After Mercedes and then Lotus pioneered the straightline speed-boosting concept this season, it emerged that the FIA intends to ban it for 2013 and beyond. But according to sporting director Sam Michael, work is well underway on a McLaren version. "It's not like the Lotus one, but we are studying such a system," the Australian is quoted by the Italian website f1passion.it. Michael said he is not sure […]

Grosjean hopes to keep Lotus seat in 2013

Romain Grosjean has admitted he hopes to keep his Lotus seat in 2013. Despite a few too many incidents, the Swiss-born rookie Frenchman has been a revelation of this season, especially in light of his mediocre and abortive 2009 debut. Lotus boss Eric Boullier and owner Gerard Lopez have indicated they are happy with both Grosjean, 26, and the team's other new driver Kimi Raikkonen. Still, Grosjean is hoping he definitely stays in 2013. "Hopefully, if all goes well, I will be with the team […]

Whitmarsh urges Mercedes to sign Concorde

Martin Whitmarsh has urged Mercedes to finally sign the new Concorde Agreement. Despite Bernie Ecclestone's earlier intimations to the contrary, it emerged at Hockenheim that Mercedes is in fact still yet to agree to the terms of the new deal. It is believed a major sticking point is that top rivals McLaren, Ferrari and Red Bull have all been offered places on F1's post-floatation board, but not Mercedes. Indeed, in an interview with McLaren boss Whitmarsh posted on F1's official website, the transcript quotes the […]

The new boss of Sochi's 2014 Russian grand prix project insists the race plans are on track. There has been speculation the event could be delayed until 2015 because the resort city's hosting of the 2014 winter Olympics is the priority. But new chief Alexander Bogdanov said: "There is only one objective. There is a contract signed with FOM, with Bernie Ecclestone, and my goal is to fulfil the obligations. "There have been rumours, and one reason is that there was a kind of information […]

Massa insists 'no reason' to leave Ferrari

Felipe Massa insists there will be "no reason" to leave Ferrari if he keeps up his improved form in 2012. Last week, the Maranello team denied it is in a "hurry" to decide the identity of Fernando Alonso's teammate for 2013. The team's website columnist The Horse Whisperer also slammed the "rumourmongers" who have speculated about the likely candidates.
