Hamilton: I know I'm still quick

Lewis Hamilton says overhauling Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg in the championship will be a "big challenge" but the Briton is sure that he has the pace to achieve such a feat. Rosberg has won the last seven Grands Prix, including all four in 2016, to open up a 43 point lead over Hamilton, who has so far been stymied by a series of technical issues and incidents. Hamilton recovered to second in Australia after being edged wide at the first corner, and battled back to […]

Button: Results don't reflect McLaren work

Jenson Button has played down McLaren's prospects of a strong result in Spain this weekend but is adamant that the outfit is working tirelessly to move up the grid. Button scored his first point of the season in Russia as team-mate Fernando Alonso took sixth, but the Briton is more downbeat over McLaren's chances of repeating such a result at Formula 1's traditional test venue. "The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya is not a circuit that would traditionally suit us, since it’s fairly hard on both the […]

Ricciardo eyes first podium of 2016

Daniel Ricciardo says the layout of the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, home to this weekend's Spanish Grand Prix, presents Red Bull with an opportunity to fight for the podium positions. Ricciardo's maiden Formula 1 podium came at the circuit two years ago, when he placed third, and the Australian began 2016 with a string of fourth place finishes in Australia, Bahrain and China. Ricciardo, who will be joined this weekend by Toro Rosso graduate Max Verstappen, is confident the RB12's traits will enable the outfit to […]

Alonso hoping for home Q3 appearance

Fernando Alonso is hopeful that he can reward his home fans by breaking into Q3 at this weekend's Spanish Grand Prix. Alonso has not appeared in the final segment of qualifying since his return to McLaren in 2015, but the outfit has been on an upwards trajectory, with the Spaniard finishing the Russian Grand Prix in sixth place. Alonso, who claimed his most recent Grand Prix victory at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya three years ago, is sure data from pre-season testing at the track will […]

Mercedes working 'day and night' on MGU-H

Mercedes technical chief Paddy Lowe says the operation is working "day and night" in order to fix the issues which have plagued Lewis Hamilton across recent races. Hamilton suffered an MGU-H failure during qualifying for the Chinese Grand Prix, which left the reigning World Champion at the back of the grid, from where he recovered to seventh. The problem struck once more following Q2 in Russia, leaving Hamilton in 10th place, before the Briton went on to finish the race as runner-up to Mercedes team-mate […]

Force India set for 'comprehensive' upgrade

Force India is set for a "comprehensive" upgrade of its Mercedes-powered VJM09 at this weekend's fifth round of the season in Spain. Force India has endured a challenging start to the 2016 campaign, scoring only eight points across the opening four races to sit eighth in the Constructors' championship. Sergio Perez collected his first points of the year in Russia and believes Friday's running at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya will be crucial to the outfit. "Barcelona will be the first chance to run our updated […]

Grosjean: Haas start better than expected

Romain Grosjean says Haas' start to life in Formula 1 is better than expected, as the sport prepares to return to Europe next weekend for the Spanish Grand Prix. Haas made its public debut during pre-season testing at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya three months ago and the team returns to the venue having picked up 22 points across the opening four races. Those points, all scored by Grosjean, have left Haas fifth in the standings, ahead of more esteemed outfits such as McLaren and Renault. […]

Mercedes, Ferrari differ in Spanish GP tyre choices

Mercedes and Ferrari have opted for slightly different tyre compound selections for next weekend's fifth round of the season in Spain. Under revised 2016 regulations, tyre supplier Pirelli brings three compounds to each race, with drivers permitted free choice for 10 of their allocated 13 sets. For the race at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, the Soft, Medium and Hard tyres will be used, the first time that the hardest compound has been taken to a Grand Prix in 2016. Both Mercedes and Ferrari drivers will […]

Barcelona faces slash in state funding

The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, home of the Spanish Grand Prix, is facing a reduction in its funding from the city council. The circuit receives in the region of €4 million annually for holding Formula 1 races, but that figure is set to be cut to €2 million this year. Barcelona elected a new council in May last year, just two weeks after officials at the circuit signed a new deal to keep Formula 1 until at least 2019. The Barcelona-in-Common party were elected and have […]

Wolff pleased with Mercedes development

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff says that the squad's 1-2 finish at the Spanish Grand Prix is encouraging for future races, due to the stern test provided by the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. Nico Rosberg claimed his first victory of the campaign while a three stop strategy enabled Lewis Hamilton to move ahead of Sebastian Vettel, who finished 45 seconds adrift of race winner Rosberg. "Nico did the perfect job: he had a great start, built the gaps that he needed and made his two-stop strategy work […]

Bottas happy to split Ferrari drivers

Williams' Valtteri Bottas expressed happiness after he switched strategies mid-race and managed to split the Ferrari drivers for a second successive race. Having beaten Sebastian Vettel to fourth position at the most recent round in Bahrain, Bottas maintained fourth place across the course of the race, resisting a late charge from compatriot Kimi Raikkonen. "It feels good to split the Ferraris for a second race in a row and this has been another solid points haul for the team," he said. "Tyre life was better […]
