Alonso-Red Bull rumour a false alarm

A meeting in Hungary between Christian Horner and Fernando Alonso's manager could have had nothing to do with the Ferrari driver. Germany's Sport Bild reported earlier that Red Bull had confirmed the meeting in the team's motor home took place at Alonso manager Luis Garcia Abad's behest. Photos of the meeting were even published, raising the tantalising prospect of Alonso buying out the rest of his long and lucrative Ferrari deal to join arch-rival Sebastian Vettel at Red Bull in 2014. But Auto Motor und […]

No more tyre tweaks in 2013 says Hembery

If Pirelli's tyre tweak is introduced for Silverstone, it will almost certainly be the last change in 2013, Paul Hembery has revealed. Following criticism of the four-stop strategies seen at times early this season, the Italian marque wanted to make more radical changes for Canada this weekend. Instead, only a minor tweak will be tested on Friday morning, and pending the agreement of the teams, the change - to solve the rear delamination problems seen this year - could be introduced for the British grand […]

Perez hopes backer Telmex joins McLaren

Sergio Perez has admitted he hopes Telmex becomes a major sponsor of the McLaren team. With the British squad set to lose its Vodafone title sponsorship at the end of the season, many have joined the dots and surmised that Mexican Perez's links to billionaire Carlos Slim will fill the financial void in 2014 and beyond. Asked if that assumption is adding pressure to his shoulders, team newcomer and 23-year-old Perez said: "No, on the contrary. Pressure and criticism is just normal. "Hopefully Telmex will […]

Massa should not be happy says Briatore

Although competitive throughout the weekend, Felipe Massa looks set to maintain his role as Ferrari's 'number 2'. The Brazilian was running ahead of highly rated teammate Fernando Alonso in Melbourne until the second round of pistops, when it was the Spaniard called in for service first. "Felipe should not be at all happy," former Renault boss Flavio Briatore is quoted as saying by Italian media. After the race, in which he finished fourth to Alonso's second, Massa told Spanish television Antena 3: "Of course you […]

Hulkenberg to use new chassis in Malaysia

Nico Hulkenberg will tackle this weekend's Malaysian grand prix with a new Sauber chassis. 90 minutes before his first race for the Swiss team in Melbourne, mechanics went to prepare the grey C32 for the race but "fuel suddenly splashed out of the car," according to well-connected Blick correspondent Roger Benoit. "(It was) a problem with the fuel tank, which is directly behind the driver." Team manager Beat Zehnder: "It must be a crack in the tank. It's something I've not experienced in twenty years." […]

Ferrari asked Perez to 'take care' of Alonso

Sergio Perez has claimed that, whilst a Sauber driver, Ferrari often asked him to "take care" of Fernando Alonso. The Mexican's comments will ramp up speculation that the famous Italian team uses its political links in the paddock for a performance advantage. Perez, formerly under Ferrari power at Sauber and also the cream of the Maranello marque's driver development 'academy', suddenly switched allegiances for 2013 as he accepted the offer to replace Lewis Hamilton at McLaren. He had been asked by Spanish sports newspaper Marca […]

New York organisers say race still on for 2013

Organisers of the New York street race have hit back at Bernie Ecclestone's claim the inaugural 2013 date might be delayed a year. The F1 chief executive had announced a race on the streets of New Jersey for 2013, and recent photos showed that work on the main pit building is well underway. But Ecclestone told the BBC this week: "Maybe the New York race will be 2013. It's a (question of) when. 2013 or 2014." Some sensed that the surprise news might be a […]

Marko: Team order for Vettel to retire car not tactical

Red Bull has hit back at claims the team lied about a technical problem in Malaysia in order to gain a tactical advantage for the forthcoming races. Near the end of the Sepang race, Sebastian Vettel's engineer repeatedly instructed the back-to-back world champion to retire his RB8 car. Team boss Christian Horner said the brake temperatures had risen to a dangerous level, but Vettel nonetheless raced to the chequered flag and finished eleventh, one position out of the points. Horner explained Vettel did not hear […]

Photos show Sauber with UBS sponsor logos

Sauber came tantalisingly close to a major sponsorship deal with UBS, the Zurich based global financial services company. It emerged recently that, before deciding to sponsor the entire sport last year, UBS chief executive Oswald Grubel wanted instead to link the brand with an individual team. Blick claims that team was Hinwil based Sauber, and the newspaper has now published three 'secret' photographs to prove it. The newspaper said Grubel is friends with the similarly-aged team owner Peter Sauber, and that the sponsor tie-up came […]

Horner not worried Monza fans took Webber wing

Christian Horner insists he is not worried that pieces of a current-spec Red Bull front wing are currently sitting in the lounge rooms of fans -- and possibly elsewhere. After Mark Webber's Monza crash, fans collected up the carbon fibre pieces of the mysterious and highly effective Adrian Newey-penned component. "No problem. You can't get any sensitive information from small pieces like that," boss Horner is quoted by La Stampa newspaper after being shown newspaper photos of the wreckage in a Spanish spectator's home. It […]
