Lopez: Maldonado is 'unbelievably fast'

Lotus chairman Gerard Lopez has asserted that new recruit Pastor Maldonado is 'unbelievably fast'. Maldonado joined Lotus from Williams at the start of 2014 but has so far failed to reach Q3 or score a championship point. But Lopez insists that the Venezuelan's pace is not a problem. "We don’t have a number-one driver," he told The Official F1 Website. "We never had one, even when Kimi [Raikkonen] was with us. Whoever is in front is in front! Romain [Grosjean] has matured a lot. He […]

But Grosjean remains encouraged by the pace shown by team-mate Pastor Maldonado, who set the ninth fastest time. Maldonado: Top five possible in Spain

Pastor Maldonado believes that Lotus can fight for a top five result at next weekend's Spanish Grand Prix. Maldonado, who claimed victory at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in 2012, has yet to score a point so far in 2014 but reckons that he and Lotus can leap up the grid in Spain. "I’m expecting to be more competitive," he said. "It will be very important to start scoring some points, but if everything goes well and we get some luck too then a top five […]

Pastor Maldonado has accepted the blame after crashing out of the second practice session at the Chinese Grand Prix. It was not a good Friday for the Venezuelan as he suffered several off-track excursions before his error upon entering the pit lane. Lotus driver Pastor Maldonado has warned that excessive penalties could ruin racing in Formula 1. Formula 1's new penalty points system was given the thumbs up by some of Maldonado's rivals ahead of this weekend's Chinese Grand Prix but the Venezuelan raised a few concerns. Maldonado was involved in an accident with Sauber's Esteban Gutierrez last time out in Bahrain, for which he was given a penalty during the race, three penalty points added to his super license and a five place grid drop for […]

Pastor Maldonado is aiming to end his points drought at next weekend's Chinese Grand Prix. The Venezuelan driver has not finished a Formula 1 race inside the top 10 since July last year but having completed his first race distance for Lotus in Bahrain, Maldonado is hoping to score a point, even if he admits the characteristics of the Shanghai circuit will not make it easy. "It could be a bit tricky for us as we aren’t the quickest on long straights at the moment, […]

Lotus's difficult 2014 season continued on Tuesday as they suffered a disrupted day of running during testing in Bahrain. The E22 suffered two power unit related failures which restricted Pastor Maldonado to just 16 laps. Lotus has failed to score a point so far in 2014, although both drivers finished last weekend's Bahrain Grand Prix. "This morning our programme was focused on aerodynamic work and we achieved a lot, even with a limited amount of laps," said Maldonado. "This afternoon the plan was to work on performance, evaluating parts […]
