Feature: Ferrari hands it to Rosberg

A Mercedes 1-2, with Sebastian Vettel in third position, appeared on the surface to be an underwhelmingly predictable result, as if 2015 hadn't quite finished. However, the path to the podium positions was one of intrigue, as Ferrari initially exploited Mercedes’ weakness before snatching defeat from the jaws of victory when an unexpected variable was thrown in its way. Lewis Hamilton had romped to his 50th career pole position, joining only Michael Schumacher and Ayrton Senna in achieving the feat, having topped all three practice […]

Mercedes almost retired Rosberg due to brake issue

Mercedes chief Toto Wolff has revealed that the outfit came close to retiring eventual Australian Grand Prix race winner Nico Rosberg due to a brake issue with his W07 Hybrid. Rosberg claimed victory at Albert Park after Ferrari's aggressive strategy for Sebastian Vettel failed to pay off, forcing the former champion to make an extra stop for tyres, clearing the path for Rosberg. However, Wolff says that Mercedes at one stage had to make a call to keep Rosberg on track, rather than retiring him […]

Rosberg hails perfect start after Australia win

Nico Rosberg hailed a 'perfect' start to the season as he collected victory at the Australian Grand Prix for the second time in three years. Rosberg lost out to Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen at the start but used the undercut during the first stint to move ahead of the Finn, briefly challenging Vettel for the lead. Rosberg remained behind his compatriot but profited when Mercedes opted to fit Medium tyres after the restart, compared to Ferrari fitting another set of the Super Softs […]

Nico Rosberg led a Mercedes 1-2 at an action-packed Australian Grand Prix, as the race was turned on its head following a red flag period. Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel controlled the early stages but lost out on strategy when the race was halted after a terrifying accident involving Fernando Alonso and Esteban Gutiérrez. Vettel surged into the lead at the start as both Mercedes drivers bogged down, as Kimi Räikkönen moved into second at Rosberg’s expense while Lewis Hamilton took to the run-off at Turn 1 […]

Hamilton glad Mercedes uncovered minor problem

Lewis Hamilton joked that he was glad Mercedes detected a problem with its W07 Hybrid as its faultless pre-season programme was interrupted by a transmission failure. Hamilton started his 70th lap shortly before lunch but his car came to a halt along the pit straight, the first - and only - time the outfit's 2016 car stopped on track during pre-season testing. Despite the stoppage, team-mate Nico Rosberg was able to join the action an hour into the afternoon session, as Mercedes finished the eight […]
