Red Bull features mysterious air intake on stepped nose

Red Bull raised eyebrows throughout the F1 world on Monday by showing some glimpses of its 2012 car. Although detailed images are not yet available, the 'stepped nose' on the RB8 features a mysterious air intake. "Why?" wondered Germany's Bild newspaper. Spain's Marca said the intake is "surprising and unprecedented" among the growing field of 2012. "Perhaps the intention is to cool the KERS batteries," wondered Italy's Autosprint. Finnish broadcaster MTV3 cited the information of Caterham's technical boss Mike Gascoyne in speculating that the purpose […]

Gascoyne: Most cars to have ugly nose in 2012

Mike Gascoyne on Thursday said he thinks most F1 cars will feature an unseemly nose in 2012. Caterham is bearing the brunt of the criticism so far, with the newly-unveiled CT01 slammed by fans who say the radically-stepped nose section is ugly. But the solution is the result of new regulations to lower the extreme 'point' of the nose for crash safety, while the monocoque height rules stay the same. "As we're the first car out it is obviously stirring up a lot of debate," […]

Cloud still hangs over Trulli's 2012 seat

A cloud still hangs over Jarno Trulli's race seat at Caterham for 2012. In September last year, the Malaysian team - then known as Team Lotus - inked a new contract for the forthcoming season with the 37-year-old Italian. But the media statement referred only to "an agreement to keep Jarno on board", with some pundits immediately noting that it could mean only an ambassadorial role. The provisional entry list for 2012, however, named Trulli as Heikki Kovalainen's continuing teammate. Team owner Tony Fernandes said […]

The F1Zone Awards 2011

We know who the best driver is, who the best team is and what the best race was. But what about some odd events from 2011. Here's a satirical reflection of the year Best comedy act: Lewis Hamilton and Felipe Massa, for managing to collide several times in the same season Best ginger moustache: Sebastian Vettel Biggest flight: Vitaly Petrov for his moment in the Malaysian Grand Prix. It was just when he was beginning to convince us that he was actually a good driver […]

Caterham link hints at Renault switch for HRT

Cosworth could be left with just a single Formula 1 customer next year, if the latest rumblings from the rumour mill turn out to be true. It was reported at the end of last month that HRT, the struggling Spanish team, is set to begin working with a Cologne company co-owned by Tony Fernandes and Mike Gascoyne. Fernandes and Gascoyne, best known for heading the Team Lotus/Caterham team, reportedly now also own "the design office of the former Toyota team", according to the BBC in […]

Fernandes almost in tears as Team Lotus secure tenth

16th and 18th positions might not sound like a reason for celebration in any grand prix, but for Team Lotus today it was a result of enormous significance. While not in its own way dramatic, Team Lotus’s finish, or more pertinently the failure of HRT or Virgin to improve on the three 13th places that Lotus achieved in Australia, Monaco and Italy, ensure the team from Hingham, Norfolk, finished tenth in the Constructors’ World Championship for consecutive seasons, and with it in effect gained promotion […]

Abu Dhabi Saturday quotes: Lotus

Heikki Kovalainen - 18th: "I am really pleased with that performance today. We definitely got as much performance as we could out of the car and to break into the 1.42s is very satisfying. I pretty much nailed the quick lap and I think we know that where we are on race pace gives us another chance of a strong finish tomorrow. I'm also looking forward to Brazil where we have an update to the rear wing coming - that should give us a better […]

Abu Dhabi Friday quotes: Lotus

Heikki Kovalainen - 18th: "Not too bad at all. Both sessions were pretty straightforward and we kept making improvements all day. The car felt good on both sets of tyres - the track here has really good grip levels and the degradation on the softs was pretty low, certainly manageable, so that looks good for Sunday. The main thing is that our Fridays are now all solid, giving us the chance to really dial the cars in and that means we can work on maximising […]
