McLaren driver Jenson Button says the speed difference between his Honda-powered machine and rival cars was "scary" as he finished 15th at the Brazilian Grand Prix. Button started the race from 16th spot on the grid and made up one place to collect 15th and was pleasantly surprised by his ability to compete with rivals. "We never enjoy P15, but the race itself was reasonably pleasurable – I could push the car and fight people in the corners," he said. "We know where our weaknesses […]

Alonso confident of large McLaren gains

Fernando Alonso is confident that McLaren will be able to make substantial progress across the winter period as the outfit bids to close the gap on Mercedes. Alonso surprised by McLaren result

Fernando Alonso expressed his surprise after McLaren was able to finish with both cars in the points, albeit before the Spaniard was handed a post-race penalty. Alonso finished in 10th position, behind team-mate Jenson Button, though was stripped of his point after exceeding track limits repeatedly, with stewards handing him a five second sanction. That dropped him to 11th position, but he was still upbeat regarding the result. "To have both cars finish in the top 10 at a circuit where we didn’t expect to […]

Button encouraged by qualifying performance

Jenson Button says he is encouraged by the pace which he was able to display during qualifying for the Russian Grand Prix. Button was 13th quickest during Saturday's session at the Sochi Autodrom but is wary of the likelihood that rivals will be faster in race trim. "This was probably my best qualifying performance of the year," he said. "Today, we got into Q2 due to our actual speed, rather than because of the others having any issues. "Q1 was straightforward – I was only […]
