Button: European races will help McLaren

Jenson Button is sure that McLaren will be able to display its full potential when Formula 1 returns to its European heartlands next month. McLaren has made progress following a difficult reunion with Honda in 2015, though Button has yet to collect a point, scoring a 14th and 13th in Australia and China respectively, split by a retirement in Bahrain. However, Button was running inside the top 10 before his MP4-31 failed in Bahrain, while McLaren's shot at Q3 was scuppered in China due to […]

Alonso: Midfield competition 'very tough'

McLaren driver Fernando Alonso is hopeful that the outfit can continue to make progress after acknowledging that competition in the midfield is "very tough." McLaren finished a lowly ninth in the 2015 standings but improvements across the winter have elevated the team back into a tightly-contested midfield. Alonso finished in 12th place at the Chinese Grand Prix but is optimistic that he can improve on that result at Sochi this weekend. "Our car feels very positive, and our progress is encouraging, but I hope we […]

Alonso positive despite missing points

Fernando Alonso expressed positivity despite missing out on a points finish upon his return to Formula 1 action at the Chinese Grand Prix. Alonso missed the second round of the year in Bahrain due to injury but was cleared to return in China and started the race in 11th position. McLaren's two-stop strategy left the Spaniard on the edge of points but he ultimately came home in 12th position. "We didn’t quite have the pace to record a good result and finish in the points," […]

Alonso 'massively frustrated' with Q2 exit

Fernando Alonso believes McLaren had the capability to progress through to Q3 for the first time this season until Q2 was stopped due to a wheel detaching from Nico Hulkenberg's Force India. Both Alonso and Jenson Button were preparing for their final flying laps in Q2 when Hulkenberg's left front tyre came loose, causing the session to be halted. As there was insufficient time for the session to be restarted and for drivers to complete a lap, Q2 was abandoned, leaving Alonso in 12th, with […]

Alonso managing rib pain in China

Fernando Alonso returned to action for McLaren in China and says that any pain from his ribs is 'manageable.' Alonso had not driven competitvely since he crashed out of the Australian Grand Prix in dramatic fashion, sustaining lung and rib injuries in the process. Rib fractures ruled Alonso out of the Bahrain Grand Prix but the Spaniard was cleared to drive following a medical examination on Thursday. "I’ve really missed driving the car in the last 26 days," said Alonso, who was assessed once more […]

Alonso given clearance for China return

The FIA has cleared Fernando Alonso to return to action at the Chinese Grand Prix, but the Spaniard must undergo another medical examination after the first practice session on Friday. Alonso missed the Bahrain Grand Prix due to the injuries which he sustained in a high-speed crash in Australia but McLaren applied for Alonso to return in China. Following a medical check-up on Thursday in Shanghai, Alonso has provisionally been cleared to participate in this weekend's Grand Prix. "Back to the car," Alonso posted on […]

Alonso returns to training after missing Bahrain

Fernando Alonso is back in training after missing last weekend's Bahrain Grand Prix due to rib fractures, which he sustained in the season-opening Australian Grand Prix. Alonso suffered the injury in a high-speed crash at Albert Park and was not passed fit by FIA doctors during a mandatory medical assessment in Bahrain. He was consequently replaced by reserve driver Stoffel Vandoorne, who went on to collect McLaren's first point of the season after placing 10th. Alonso told Sky Sports F1 on the grid in Bahrain […]

Button rues loss of power while set for points

McLaren driver Jenson Button was left to lament a loss of power which he believes cost him a haul of points at the Bahrain Grand Prix. Button qualified in 14th place but moved up into the top 10 early on before he slowed in his McLaren, eventually parking his MP4-31 by the side of the circuit. While team-mate Stoffel Vandoorne was able to collect a point on his debut, Button reckons he could have been in the fight higher up the order. "We made some […]

Vandoorne scores point in maiden F1 race

Stoffel Vandoorne believes he showed his capabilities as he claimed a world championship point on his Formula 1 debut with McLaren. Vandoorne started the race from 12th place and was a key player in the midfield battle as he rounded out the top 10, driving in place of Fernando Alonso. "This result was more or less what I expected – I maximised the opportunity and I’m quite satisfied," said Vandoorne. "The start was a little bit difficult. There was debris left and right – it […]

Vandoorne pleased by maiden qualifying effort

Formula 1 debutant Stoffel Vandoorne declared himself happy after he secured 12th position on the grid for the Bahrain Grand Prix. Vandoorne, filling in for the unfit Fernando Alonso, progressed through Q1 and set the 12th best time in Q2, finishing two places ahead of team-mate Jenson Button. "I'm quite happy at the moment," said Vandoorne, who has claimed three GP2 victories at the circuit. "Since practice I felt very confident in the car, straightway I knew I could match Jenson’s lap times. "It's always […]

Stoffel Vandoorne says he is encouraged by the progress he made during practice as he prepares to make his Formula 1 debut in Bahrain this weekend. Vandoorne, the reigning GP2 champion, is standing in for Fernando Alonso due to the injuries which he sustained at the Australian Grand Prix. Alonso: Rib fractures presented risk to safety

Fernando Alonso says that rib fractures which he suffered during the Australian Grand Prix would pose too great a risk to allow him to participate in Bahrain this weekend. Alonso's McLaren clipped the back of Esteban Gutierrez at Albert Park and careered into the wall, before being tipped into a roll, eventually landing upside down. Alonso was diagnosed with a small pneumothorax on the lung and while that has cleared, rib fractures mean that doctors have ruled him out of competition at Sakhir. "To summarise […]
