Hamilton takes pole in Austria thriller

Lewis Hamilton claimed pole position for the Austrian Grand Prix during a dramatic finale to qualifying at the Red Bull Ring. Heavy rain towards the end of Q2 drenched the circuit and left the drivers starting Q3 on Intermediate tyres, before the track dried sufficiently for slicks. Rosberg: Tyre usage decisive in Austria

Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg reckons tyre usage will be crucial as he chases a hat-trick of victories at the Austrian Grand Prix. Rosberg secured victory at the Red Bull Ring in 2014 and 2015 and, having won in Baku, maintained his form by leading the way during both practice sessions on Friday. Hamilton rues 'de-rating' problem during race

Reigning World Champion Lewis Hamilton was left to rue a 'de-rating' car during the European Grand Prix, which left him with less electrical deployment than usual. Hamilton started from 10th after crashing during qualifying but recovered to fifth when he encountered the problem. Hamilton accepts blame for poor session

Lewis Hamilton apologised to his Mercedes team after a sub-par showing during qualifying for the European Grand Prix at the Baku City Circuit. Hamilton topped all three practice sessions but had off-track excursions in both Q1 and Q2, before scuppering his first Q3 effort with an off at Turn 15. Reigning World Champion Lewis Hamilton continued his form by clocking the quickest time during the final practice session for the European Grand Prix. Hamilton moved to the top of the standings with a late lap of 1:44.352 on the Super Soft tyres, beating Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg by 0.258s. Lewis Hamilton maintained his strong form by setting the quickest time during the second practice session for the European Grand Prix at the Baku City Circuit. Lewis Hamilton led a Mercedes 1-2 during the first practice session for the European Grand Prix at the new Baku City Circuit in Azerbaijan. Hamilton moved to the front with a time of 1:46.489 midway through the 90 minute session as both Mercedes drivers ran on the Super Soft tyres.
