Magnussen reckons points possible without penalty

Renault driver Kevin Magnussen reckons he could have scored his first points of the year for Renault had he not been forced to start the Bahrain Grand Prix from the pit lane. Magnussen failed to stop at the weighbridge during Friday's second practice session, having believed that the signal was solely for Red Bull's Daniil Kvyat, rather than for both drivers. Magnussen was penalised with a pit lane start but despite his disadvantage, he recovered to finish in 11th position, as Renault once more narrowly […]

Magnussen misunderstood weighbridge rules

Renault driver Kevin Magnussen says he misunderstood the regulations surrounding stopping at the weighbridge, believing the FIA was calling Red Bull's Daniil Kvyat. Magnussen was requested to stop at the end of the second session but thought the command was solely for Kvyat, rather than both drivers. As a result, Magnussen will have to start the Bahrain Grand Prix from the pit lane. "I saw the red light to indicate the need to stop, which actually was for Daniil but in fact the same light […]

Magnussen to start from pit lane after penalty

Renault driver Kevin Magnussen must start this weekend's Bahrain Grand Prix from the pit lane after failing to stop at the weighbridge during Friday's second practice session. Magnussen was called to the weighbridge at the end of running but "when signalled to do so by the red traffic light, the car was not returned to the FIA garage and work was undertaken." Consequently, Magnussen must now commence Sunday's Grand Prix from the pit lane.

Magnussen: Renault clearly a top team

Kevin Magnussen has described Renault as a 'top team' as it bids to return to the front of the Formula 1 grid across the next few years. Renault has returned to the sport as a full works team for the first time since 2010, and recruited former McLaren driver Magnussen to head its attack, after the Dane spent 2015 on the sidelines. Magnussen, who spent several years within the McLaren fold, was impressed by Renault's approach after the Australian Grand Prix, in which he finished […]

Q2 result exceeded expectations for Renault

Renault drivers Jolyon Palmer and Kevin Magnussen expressed surprise at progressing through to the second knockout segment during qualifying for the Australian Grand Prix. Renault has returned to Formula 1 as a full works team after a five year absence but both drivers made it through to Q2, with Palmer in 14th and Magnussen in 15th. "We’re happy to be in Q2; we didn’t really expect much more," said Palmer. "I hadn’t done many laps in the dry here so I was trying to build […]

Magnussen targets points on Renault debut

Kevin Magnussen says a points finish is his ambition as he prepares to make his full-time Formula 1 comeback with Renault in Australia this weekend. Magnussen finished second on his debut at Albert Park in 2014 but was unable to start his sole event last year as his McLaren developed an engine problem on the way to the grid. Magnussen has not entered a race since his last appearance for McLaren 12 months ago but now makes a return to the sport with Renault, alongside […]

Magnussen hails positive pre-season for Renault

Kevin Magnussen says he heads to the Australian Grand Prix with a positive mentality after concluding his pre-season testing programme at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. Magnussen set the third best time for Renault on the second day of the final test and completed 126 laps despite suffering from a small water leak in the RS16. Magnussen will now hand over to team-mate Jolyon Palmer for the remainder of the test. "It’s been a positive pre-season of testing for me and I couldn’t have wanted much […]

Magnussen pleased with Renault baseline

Kevin Magnussen believes Renault has a good baseline on which to build after he finished fourth fastest on the final day of the opening pre-season test in Spain. Magnussen, making his Formula 1 return after a year out, admitted he was "bruised" after 153 laps in the RS16, with his running coming to a halt 15 minutes early when he ran out of fuel. Despite this, the Dane is upbeat about the potential at Renault in 2016. "I think it’s a good baseline, it’s nice […]

Vasseur: Magnussen has talent to win titles

Renault Racing Director Frederic Vasseur believes new recruit Kevin Magnussen has the ability to win races and titles with the outfit. Vasseur has spent two decades at the helm of ASM, which became ART Grand Prix, in GP2 and GP3, guiding youngsters such as Nico Rosberg, Lewis Hamilton, Nico Hulkenberg and Romain Grosjean. Vasseur reckons that Magnussen, who claimed the Formula Renault 3.5 title in 2013 and spent 2014 racing for McLaren, can help return Renault to the top of the standings. "Kevin has a […]

Feature: Magnussen gets second chance

To go from being made redundant on his birthday to securing a seat with a manufacturer committed to achieving long-term Formula 1 success in the space of less than four months is quite the turnaround for Kevin Magnussen. The Dane faced a career outside of Formula 1 as a dab of misfortune and bad timing led to him being on the brink of the sport’s scrapheap at the tender age of 23, frustratingly mirroring the path of father Jan. More: Magnussen joins Renault Sport F1 […]

Magnussen joins Palmer at Renault

The newly renamed Renault Sport Formula 1 team has confirmed that Kevin Magnussen will race for the squad this season. Magnussen has replaced Pastor Maldonado, who announced on Monday that he will not be competing in the sport in 2016, ostensibly due to sponsorship problems. Magnussen will partner Jolyon Palmer, who was promoted from the role of reserve driver by Lotus prior to Renault’s takeover of the operation. The news was confirmed during Renault’s comeback press conference at Guyancourt on Wednesday. "It’s an incredible feeling […]

Dennis: McLaren will help outgoing Magnussen

McLaren CEO Ron Dennis says the squad will assist outgoing reserve driver Kevin Magnussen in enjoying a Formula 1 career after confirming that the Dane will not be part of the team's plans into 2016. Magnussen was demoted to a reserve role with McLaren for 2015, having raced for them last year, and the outfit recently confirmed that Jenson Button will remain alongside Fernando Alonso into 2016. Magnussen has repeatedly expressed his desire to return to a race seat for 2016 and Dennis says that […]
