Ricciardo's Hungaroring blitz: Hungarian GP review

In the lead up to qualifying, Formula 1 team principals held a meeting with Bernie Ecclestone to discuss ways to improve the show. They decided to hire Flavio Briatore to a new working group, set-up to look at ways of making the spectacle more popular. After a thrilling 70 laps in Hungary, the focus should be on anything but the on-track action as Daniel Ricciardo passed two world champions in the last five laps to claim his second Formula 1 victory, ahead of Fernando Alonso […]

Ricciardo elated with second victory

An ecstatic Daniel Ricciardo said that his second Grand Prix victory 'feels as good as the first' as he crossed the line at the head of the pack in Hungary. Ricciardo started from fourth on the grid but moved to the front following a well-timed Safety Car period early on in the race. He had to make another pit stop and emerged behind Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton and managed to pass both drivers during the closing stages to take his second win of the […]

Jules Bianchi says he was relieved to finish the Hungarian Grand Prix after being hit by Pastor Maldonado. Maldonado tried to make a move on the Marussia driver but the duo made contact, with Maldonado spinning and Bianchi sustaining a puncture. We threw it all away - Button

Jenson Button says that McLaren threw away a chance of a strong result after calling the conditions wrong during the first pit stop phase. Button jumped up to fifth at the start in conditions suitable for Intermediate tyres and was able to dive into the pits just as the Safety Car was deployed. But while eventual race winner Daniel Ricciardo switched to Options, Button remained on Intermediates as McLaren anticipated the wet weather to return. It remained dry, forcing Button to pit after just a […]

Sauber encouraged despite missing points

Sauber's pairing of Adrian Sutil and Esteban Gutierrez say they are encouraged by the team's performance at the Hungarian Grand Prix despite coming agonisingly close to their first points of 2014. Sutil finished in 11th place, less than a second behind McLaren's Jenson Button, while Gutierrez ran inside the top 10 before a mechanical problem halted his C33. "Finishing in P11 was very close to gaining one point," said Sutil. "It was not an easy race, especially at the beginning with the difficult weather conditions […]

Alonso 'risk' almost nets victory

Fernando Alonso says that Ferrari had no option but to adopt an attacking strategy as they attempted to claim victory at the Hungarian Grand Prix. Alonso stayed out on Option tyres as the race progressed and held the lead until lap 68 of 70, when Daniel Ricciardo surged through to the head of the field. Alonso nonetheless held second place to claim Ferrari's best result of the season. "[I'm] extremely satisfied," he said. "It's been a tough weekend, a tough season, so this is a […]

Rosberg: Safety Car ruined race

Nico Rosberg believes that the timing of the first Safety Car ruined his chances of victory at the Hungarian Grand Prix. Rosberg led away from pole in wet conditions before the Safety Car was deployed due to Marcus Ericsson's accident. Rosberg, along with several others, missed the pit entry and had to wait another lap, dropping down the order as a result. The German eventually recovered to fourth place, although he saw his lead over Lewis Hamilton trimmed to 11 points after his team-mate recovered […]

Hamilton grateful to recover after 'worst' mistake

Lewis Hamilton says he was grateful to recover points after one of the 'worst' moments of his life when he spun on the opening lap. Hamilton started from the pit lane but spun under braking at turn two and tagged the wall, but was able to continue. Hamilton went on to make up ground and finish in third place, closing the gap to team-mate Nico Rosberg to 11 points in the process. "That was one of the worst moments of my life that spin, I […]

Hulkenberg, Perez apologise for shunts

Nico Hulkenberg and Sergio Perez have apologised after two separate accidents ended Force India's streak of top 10 finishes in 2014. Hulkenberg tagged Perez at the final corner and the resulting damage sent the German into the tyre barrier. Perez continued for a few more laps but dipped a wheel onto the wet kerb exiting the last turn and slammed into the pit wall. "It was not the best day in the office and I’m feeling very disappointed," said Hulkenberg. "The track was drying out […]

Perez hindered by hydraulics leak

Force India driver Sergio Perez lamented a hydraulics leak which cost him a shot at making the top 10 shootout during qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix. Perez was restricted to just a single run at the start of Q2 as a problem developed on his VJM07, forcing him to abandon his session. He will start the race from 13th on the grid. Hamilton anticipates tough Hungary fightback

A dejected Lewis Hamilton admitted he will struggle to make it into the top 10 during the Hungarian Grand Prix after suffering from a fire in the opening stages of qualifying at the Hungaroring. Hamilton's Mercedes caught fire as he approached the final corner and he dived into the pits in order for marshals to extinguish the flames which trickled from his stricken machine. As a result, he will start Sunday's race from 20th on the grid. "I can't really believe it today, there was […]
