Double points introduced for season finale; driver numbers confirmed

The FIA has announced that double points will be awarded during the final race of the season, effective from the start of 2014. The resulting changes means that 50 points will be allocated to the winner of the final round of 2014, which will be held in Abu Dhabi, rather than the usual 25. 'Double drivers’ and constructors’ points will be awarded at the final race of the Formula One season in order to maximise focus on the Championship until the end of the campaign', […]

Todt backs move for permanent race numbers in F1

The newly re-elected Jean Todt says he supports moves to reinstate permanent race numbers in Formula One. In an earlier era, F1 fans became accustomed to associating a number with their favourite driver -- like Gilles Villeneuve's fabled 27, or the 'red 5' of Nigel Mansell. But in more recent years, race numbers have simply been assigned by the FIA on the basis of teams' finishing positions in the constructors' world championship. It emerged recently, however, that a push is on to bring back permanent […]

FIA confirms official 2014 F1 calendar

Races in New Jersey, Mexico and South Korea were dropped from Formula One's official 2014 calendar on Wednesday, with the season remaining at 19 races instead of a record 22. All three grands prix had been listed provisionally, with asterisks against them, on a previous calendar published in September by the sport's governing International Automobile Federation (FIA). None appeared however on the final version issued on Wednesday after a meeting of the FIA's World Motor Sports Council in Paris. New Jersey's Grand Prix of the […]

Ward withdraws from FIA elections, Todt unopposed

David Ward has withdrawn his candidacy for next month's FIA elections, leaving current president Jean Todt unopposed to secure a second term in the position. Ward, who released his manifesto in September, did not receive sufficient support from member clubs. "I am writing to confirm my withdrawal as a candidate in the 2013 FIA Presidential election," Ward said in a statement. "It has not proved possible for me to secure the required number of regional Vice Presidents for Sport to ensure the eligibility of my […]

Alonso 'waiting' on fitness for Austin GP

It is possible Fernando Alonso will not travel to Austin for this weekend's US grand prix. The highly respected correspondent for Italy's La Gazzetta dello Sport, Pino Allievi, said Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo "is not even remotely" contemplating the prospect of the Spaniard sitting out the race. But, after his high-G bump over the Abu Dhabi kerbs a week ago, Alonso admitted he was in back pain, while his manager Luis Garcia Abad 'tweeted' an alarming photo of the driver strapped to a spinal […]

Kvyat qualifies for F1 super licence

Daniil Kvyat has qualified for his F1 super licence. Energy drink company Red Bull has named the Russian teenager as Daniel Ricciardo's successor at Toro Rosso for 2014. But the marque wants to give Kvyat an early start by sending him out for Friday morning practice sessions this weekend in Austin, and the following week in Brazil. Until now, the only spanner in the works has been the new GP3 champion's lack of a F1 super licence, the mandatory FIA credential needed by drivers in […]

Alonso visits hospital as a precaution

Fernando Alonso has been taken to hospital for precautionary checks on his back after running over kerbs at high speed during the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The Spaniard bounced over the kerbs at 150mph, with the impact so severe that it triggered an alarm in the car that means drivers must go to the medical centre as a precaution. Vettel reprimanded for post-race celebrations

World champion Sebastian Vettel has been reprimanded by the stewards after failing to observe the proper post-race protocol. Vettel opted not to enter parc ferme but instead drove to the pits straight, where he completed a series of donuts and climbed from his Red Bull RB9. The stewards decided to reprimand Vettel, but accepted that 'due to special circumstances' they accepted his version of events. 'The driver failed to proceed directly to the post race parc fermé as detailed under article 43.3 of the FIA Formula One Sporting Regulations'. read the stewards' report. Capitalising on Qatar link 'my last big wish' says Williams

Reaping the fruits of the collaboration with Qatar is Sir Frank Wiliams' "last big wish", he admitted on Tuesday. A couple of years ago, the British team partnered with the soverign Arab state to establish the Williams Technology Centre in Qatar, to develop and commercialise F1-bred technologies. Williams, 71, is still the Grove based team's boss, but he has handed over many of his responsibilities to his new deputy Claire, his daughter.
