Renault say recovery is 90% complete

Power unit supplier Renault believes that their recovery with their engine is 90% complete. Renault endured a miserable start to 2014 when issues blighted their pre-season programme, but with Red Bull finishing last weekend's Spanish Grand Prix in third and fourth, the French supplier reckon that progress is being made. "A podium for Daniel [Ricciardo] and a strong, fighting fourth for Sebastian is as much as we could have hoped for," said head of track operations Remi Taffin. "The Mercedes obviously have a very good […]

Maldonado risked eliminating both of us - Ericsson

Marcus Ericsson says that Pastor Maldonado risked eliminating both of them during the opening lap of the Spanish Grand Prix. Maldonado ran over the kerb at turn 11 and hit Ericsson, forcing both onto the grass and dropping the Swede to last place. Ericsson eventually finished the race in 20th place. "I was pleased with how I got off the line and was with Kamui [Kobayashi] in 19th but then Maldonado hit me pretty hard as he tried to pass going into turn 13. His […]

Kobayashi halted by brake failure

Kamui Kobayashi says that a brake failure forced him out of the Spanish Grand Prix. Kobayashi was running towards the back of the field when he was unable to slow down for the first corner and had to call it a day after 34 laps. "My start was pretty good and I was up to 18th by the end of lap one having passed [Max] Chilton, but I couldn’t keep [Pastor] Maldonado or [Jean-Eric] Vergne behind me and lost places to them by lap five […]

Kobayashi: Like driving on ice

A downbeat Kamui Kobayashi said that driving in qualifying was like driving 'on ice' as he qualified in 21st place for the Spanish Grand Prix. Caterham has struggled throughout the weekend with its Formula 1 duo being unable to better the lap times set by their counterparts in GP2. Kobayashi said he was simply unable to get heat into his tyres. "This is all we can do, unfortunately," he said. "We don’t want to be here, but this is straightforward." "[The tyres are] too hard, […]

Caterham parts company with technical director Smith

Caterham has announced a new management structure, with technical director Mark Smith leaving the team with immediate effect. Smith's role will not be replaced, with John Iley, Jody Egginton and Gerry Hughes all assuming responsibility for specific areas and they will report to team principal Cyril Abiteboul. "First I would like to thank Mark for his time and dedication to the development of our team since he first joined in 2011," said Abiteboul. "We and Mark part company on good terms and with our best […]

Rossi, who joined the team in 2011, will take part in the first sessions in Canada and the USA later this season. Kobayashi frustrated by regulation quirk

Kamui Kobayashi expressed his frustration after a quirk in the Formula 1 regulations meant he dropped a position at the Chinese Grand Prix. Kobayashi had been involved in a race long duel with Marussia's Jules Bianchi, which was settled in favour of the Caterham driver when Kobayashi passed the Frenchman into the hairpin on the final lap. But the race result was subsequently amended with the standings at the end of lap 54, rather than lap 56, leading to the overall classification. That meant Kobayashi's […]

Kobayashi: We achieved maximum

Kamui Kobayashi says he achieved the maximum during qualifying for the Chinese Grand Prix Kobayashi was 18th quickest in the first knockout segment in wet conditions in Shanghai. "It was raining before the start of qualifying but the track conditions were right on the edge of choosing between intermediates and full wets so we went for the intermediates as that could have given us the best chance of springing a surprise in Q1," he said. "It was certainly pretty tricky on inters but the times […]

Ericsson sure Caterham can make gains

Marcus Ericsson says that he is sure there is a 'considerable' amount of time still to come from Caterham at this weekend's Chinese Grand Prix. Ericsson was the slowest of the 22 runners in China but believes the team can make gains with their CT05. "The car was oversteering too much, especially in the high speed corners, so we introduced a bit more understeer to help counteract that and it worked well on run two which we used to do some aero evaluation," he said. […]

Kobayashi: Caterham must play to its strengths

Kamui Kobayashi has urged his Caterham team to play to its strengths as he searches for a good result at next weekend's Chinese Grand Prix. Kobayashi was in the mix towards the tail end of the midfield in Bahrain but had to save fuel during the final stint of the race and came home in 15th place. That result, combined with 13th for Max Chilton, meant that Caterham conceded 10th position in the constructors' championship to Marussia. Kobayashi is hopeful that Caterham and engine supplier […]

Ericsson aiming for strongest race

Caterham driver says he is aiming for the strongest race of his nascent Formula 1 career after qualifying in 21st place for the Bahrain Grand Prix. Ericsson was eight-tenths of a second slower than team-mate Kamui Kobayashi in Q1 but believes he can put in a composed performance after a weekend of improved reliability. "We definitely made some improvements overnight and I want to thank everyone in the team for the efforts they put in to move on from what had been a bit of […]

Kobayashi targets closer gap to midfield

Kamui Kobayashi has targeted closing the gap to Caterham's rivals across the coming races. Kobayashi set the 19th fastest time during qualifying in Bahrain but believes that Caterham can close the gap to the likes of Lotus and Sauber in the near future. "FP3 was a much better session than we’d had yesterday," he said. "The guys had worked until just before curfew to get the cars ready and they did really well to prepare for Saturday. The car was performing pretty well in FP3, […]
