Red Bull must clear hurdles for Austria GP return

Red Bull needs to clear some hurdles before the Austrian grand prix can go ahead in 2014. The energy drink company and Bernie Ecclestone announced on Tuesday that an agreement to stage a race mid next year at the former A1-Ring, now called the Red Bull Ring, has been reached. APA news agency said the "provisional" deal is for at least seven consecutive Austrian grands prix. But Red Bull's statement on Tuesday admitted the deal is "on condition of approval by the required authorities". One […]

Toro Rosso pair not ready for Red Bull says Berger

Former team co-owner Gerhard Berger does not think Toro Rosso's current race drivers are ready to make the step up to Red Bull next year. It is strongly rumoured that Sebastian Vettel's long-time teammate Mark Webber, 36, will not stay at the world champion team for an eighth consecutive season in 2014. Reportedly at the front of the grid to replace him are Lotus' Kimi Raikkonen and Toro Rosso's Daniel Ricciardo, although Jean-Eric Vergne also cannot be ruled out. "I expect from both of the […]

Da Costa 'very close' to F1 debut

The latest cream of Red Bull's junior driver programme insists he is ready to step up to Formula One. With Mark Webber's contract at Red Bull Racing set to expire, it is now strongly rumoured that fellow Australian Daniel Ricciardo is in pole position to replace him. That would leave a vacancy at Red Bull's second F1 team, Toro Rosso. The obvious favourite for that seat is Antonio Felix da Costa, a 21-year-old from Portugal. Currently a frontrunner in the Formula Renault 3.5 series, da […]

Ricciardo moves into pole for Webber's seat

Daniel Ricciardo has moved into pole position to succeed his Australian compatriot Mark Webber at Red Bull next year. Particularly in the wake of the 'Multi-21' affair and subsequent rumours that Webber could sign for Porsche's Le Mans effort, the signs that Sebastian Vettel will have a new teammate in 2014 have been growing. The early favourite was Kimi Raikkonen, but Red Bull's driver manager Dr Helmut Marko insists he is in "no hurry" to make a decision. "Many drivers want to drive for Red […]

F1 tyre situation 'painful' admits Whitmarsh

Some members of F1's travelling circus admitted their frustration at the end of the Chinese grand prix. "It's quite excruciating," McLaren team boss Martin Whitmarsh is quoted by the Telegraph, "trying to save tyres non-stop from start to finish. "It feels painful, and however bad it is for me, it must be a lot worse if you have to drive like that." He is referring to the new situation caused by Pirelli's rapidly-wearing 2013 tyres. Some hail the new era that stands in stark contrast […]

Raikkonen to begin break with snowmobile race

Kimi Raikkonen will kick off his winter break with a snowmobile race. Just after signing to return to F1 in 2012 with Lotus, the 2007 world champion hurt his wrist in a snowmobile racing crash in Austria. Now, APA news agency reports that the 33-year-old Finn intends to race a 70 horse power snowmobile again, in Saalbach on 8 December. At the 2012 season finale in Brazil last weekend, Raikkonen made headlines for arriving at Interlagos late following a holiday in Los Angeles. He then […]

Klien '8000 kilometres' from F1 now

Christian Klien managed a joke on Thursday as he denied he is now a million miles from the world of formula one. "8,000 kilometres," said the former Red Bull driver, speaking to the APA news agency from his home in Switzerland and referring to the approximate distance to Singapore. A year ago, the Austrian had returned to F1 with the struggling Spanish team HRT, where he out-qualified Bruno Senna two out of three times. "That's some validation," he insisted. "Two thirds of the time I […]
