Nico Rosberg clocked the quickest time as Mercedes continued to impress during the opening day of the second test at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.

Rosberg set a time of 1:23.022 during the morning session on Soft tyres, lapping only 0.2s slower than Sebastian Vettel’s quickest time last week, which was set on the Ultra Soft compound.

Mercedes also racked up the most mileage once more, as Lewis Hamilton took over from Rosberg in the afternoon and completed a race simulation in the W07 Hybrid, setting quick and consistent times.

Valtteri Bottas was second fastest for Williams, only 0.207s behind Rosberg, albeit having set his best lap on the Ultra Soft compound.

Fernando Alonso recovered from a minor glitch shortly before the lunch break to record the third best time for McLaren, on the Soft tyres.

Kimi Räikkönen stopped on track shortly after lunch but returned to the circuit after a two hour hiatus and collected fourth spot.

Daniil Kvyat lost time in the morning session when his RB12 returned to the pits with smoky right rear brakes but placed fifth overall.

Max Verstappen completed the first day of running in the newly liveried STR11 and achieved the most laps by a single driver en-route to seventh.

Force India’s Nico Hülkenberg was eighth while Felipe Nasr publicly debuted the Sauber C35-Ferrari and was ninth, ahead of Renault’s Kevin Magnussen, who stopped on track at Turn 3 during the closing stages.

Esteban Gutiérrez’s day came to a premature end when his Haas VF-16 suffered a fuel system issue. Gutiérrez was able to complete only 23 laps during the morning session and did not appear during the afternoon as Formula 1’s newest team endured a frustrating opening to the final test.

Rio Haryanto completed only an installation lap before a minor oil leak restricted his MRT05 to the garage until just prior to the lunch break. He was able to return to action in the afternoon and rounded out the runners.
