Charles Pic has joined Lotus as the team's third driver.

Pic has spent the last two years racing in Formula 1 with Marussia and Caterham but did not retain his seat for the 2014 season.

The Frenchman will now act as the reserve to compatriot Romain Grosjean and Pastor Maldonado.

"I am very excited to join a top team and Lotus has certainly shown that they are a top team in this sport," he said.

"It’s a great honour for me and I will be working hard to give my best to the team throughout 2014.

"Obviously, the big change is that I won’t be racing in Formula 1, but I will be at the races and working in meetings which will help me develop and progress as a driver."

"In terms of resources Lotus has a fantastic facility at Enstone and the people there have experience of winning Championships. I will be spending a lot of time with the squad and I expect to learn a lot from them."

Pic admits that it will be frustrating not to be on the grid.

"Of course it will be frustrating sometimes. My role this year will be new and different from the previous two seasons when I was a race driver and it was very clear what I had to do, which was to optimise my own performance. This year as a third driver my role will be to help the team to enable Romain and Pastor to attain the team’s targets and deliver the best performance on track.

Lotus also confirmed Marco Sorensen and Nicolas Prost as reserve and development drivers.
