F1@home Experience
Hi F1 Zone fans, I had a nice Formula 1 experience (may be it's not new to some people), and I'd like to share it with F1 Zone fans, specially outside the UK where the BBC iPlayer video streaming is not allowed, but the radio is.
For the best F1 entertainment on a grand prix weekend at home Here's what I call "F1@home Experience". What you need for this nice experience is the following: a laptop computer (with internet access), and a TV (wide-screen LCD/Plasma if available).
At the time of the F1 Qualifying session and the Race, what you will do is:
1) Tune the TV to your local F1 broadcasting channel (For instance, Abu Dhabi Sports 2 in the Middle East) and mute the local audio commentary.
2) Connect the laptop the internet (wireless is more convenient), browse to the BBC iPlayer website (http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer), choose BBC Radio Five Live or BBC Radio Five Sport Extra (according to their schedule) and start the live audio streaming (English commentary by David Croft & Anthony Davidson).
3) Open another browser tab and go to Autosport Live website (http://live.autosport.com) for the live text commentary (by Emlyn Hughes and Geoff Creighton).
4) Open a new browser window and go to Formula 1 Official Live Timing (http://www.formula1.com/live_timing), but you have to register for free and enable Java on your browser.
5) If you are using Windows 7, just drag one browser window to the right to fill half the screen (or press Win+right arrow), and drag the other window to the left to fill the other half of the screen (press Win+left arrow).
Now you are watching Live TV, listening to BBC Radio experts, following Live Timing and Live Text
I hope you all liked my idea and that it could add something interesting to F1 Zone fans, and I hope you enjoy Formula 1 throughout the season with my F1@home idea
Please note the following:
- The BBC Radio Five audio availability is not guaranteed in Free Practice sessions for international audience, I can only confirm its international availability on Qualifying and Race.
- Another great Live Timing & Text commentary also available from Speed F1 RaceCast website (http://formula-one.speedtv.com/f1-racecast)
- BBC also provide text commentary on their website (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsp ... efault.stm) at the time of the Qualifying and Race.
- Eurosport used to provide live text commentary on their website before (http://eurosport.yahoo.com/formula-1), but I'm not following it this season.
- I will try the same thing this weekend for MotoGP Qatar Grand Prix. I hope it works!
- All the above-mentioned methods are legal, no hacking or backdoor violations on copyrights.
Any suggestions or nice experiences are welcome
Thanks & Best Regards

Interesting.
May I also add that (if you want) you could add a window with the F1Zone forum (or another forum ) and use that for 'chat'.
Last time I checked (mid last year) the BBC Radio live stream never worked, not even for race. Maybe things have changed since then.

I usually can't be bothered with forums in the race because it's just people saying the same thing 'CRASH!' 10 times. Much prefer having twitter up

Thank you cformula1 for the nice idea, but make sure you don't get distracted from too many resources at this same time!
Regarding the BBC iPlayer, actually if you tried opening an iPlayer TV channel video stream outside the UK, the iPlayer screen will give you this message:
"Currently BBC iPlayer TV programmes are available to play in the UK only, but all BBC iPlayer Radio programmes are available to you. Why?"
And this "Why?" is a link to http://iplayerhelp.external.bbc.co.uk/h ... /outsideuk , which states: "Can I use BBC iPlayer outside the UK? Rights agreements mean that BBC iPlayer television programmes are only available to users to download or stream (Click to Play) in the UK. However, we are aware of demand for an international version. Most radio programmes are available outside the UK in addition to podcasts, although sporting and other programmes may be subject to rights agreements".
But according to my experience, the BBC Radio 5 Live is working fine on Qualifying and the Race.

Re: F1@home Experience
I have a Twitter account. Im following the F1 teams and the BBC team (Jake Humphrey, Lee McKenzie etc.). I have their Tweets go to my phone and you get them Tweeting during the race and some of the stuff is pretty interesting for instance when the rain started to fall in Turkey the person doing the Tweets for Force India said that it was starting to rain, 5 minutes later the commentry team announced it. On Monday (7th June 2010) Mark Webber and Red Bull announced that they were staying together next year on Twitter first and then told the press. So I would advise people to get Twitter if you don't already have it and I could post you the official Twitter page of the teams and drivers if anyone is interested. It is very interesting stuff and some of the Tweets the drivers make a very funny. Hope this helps someone
