Junior stars, Grand Prix flops

Post by phil1993 » 18 May 2012, 16:41

A thread dedicated to those who starred in the junior categories, but never got going in F1.

I always think of Nelson Piquet Jr - who I maintain was better than many give him credit for - and Tonio Liuzzi.

We just going to list names? :p

Agree with those two though. Jan Magnussen is an obvious one, compare what people thought of him in the junior categories and his record (won something like 14 out of 18 races in British F3 in 1994) and what he actually achieved. He's only 38, but his F1 career was over fourteen years ago.

How about Martin Brundle? Battled with Senna for British F3 Championship and narrowly missed out but never won an F1 race.....

Antonio Pizzonia
Marc Hynes (although he never actually made it to F1)
Luciano Burti
Anthony Davidson

These are all quite recent I suppose.

Liuzzi has already been mentioned. I don't agree with Brundle. He had a long and decent F1 career, achieving multiple podiums. He may not have won but he managed to stay in F1 for many years, be regarded as a decent driver and drive for a couple of front running teams.

Ralph Firman should probably be added to the list.
