Both would be missing the point by a landslide. There's no way you can make every angle of a heavy recovery truck safe to hit at 250 km/h. As for cockpit covers, what good would it have been when the impact was strong enough to rip apart the entire car's top half?

What needs to be debated is the fact that a recovery truck was operating on the track without a Safety Car, in the rather treacherous context of rapidly worsening wet conditions. I've watched F1 since the 90's, including the one race where this exact situation occured and nearly resulted in fatalities (Suzuka 1994 iirc), and complaints from commenters and (former) drivers regularly pointed out any occurences of a truck operating under racing conditions as a safety gamble. There was a point in the early 2000's where Brundle would complain about a truck on the track literally every other race. How could there be a situation like this in 2014? At Suzuka of all places?

IMO the person who allowed the recovery of Sutil's car without deploying the SC has a lot to answer for. The race director's job basically is to ensure he always gets criticized for being overly cautious, rather than ever risking a single tragedy.

I'm still curious about the timing of the incident. If there was at least one lap between the two crashes as I suspect, this really is inexcusable.

Recovery vehicles are out all the time while the cars are running, so why not add some ground level protection? Sure maybe they should have had the SC out in that instance, after all they do it for a lot less, but regardless of that, why not put something on the recovery vehicles in case of just this kind of incident.

What a crazy unfortunate accident. I feel so bad for Jules..... such a promising up and coming guy. His season is definitely over and he's by no means out of the woods. Breathing on his own is really + but doesnt mean all is great.

During the race I was totally amazed when all they had was yellows with the crane and operators in that corner and then all the weird hassle around what seemed just like Sutil's car. In fact, i dozed during the Red Flag only to wakeup to the news it was Bianchi the cause for that weird situation...

Doesn't matter how's the helmet in those type of crashes. Hitting that sort of vehicle will mess you up. There's no dampening and the driver's brains get the full internal blow. Seems he didnt slow down for the yellows?

Other than that it was a great race. Lewis was super. Rosberg too, their racing was great to watch. Pass of the day to Ricci.

There is no released evidence either way.

I wonder if F1 might seek to introduce the Le Mans 'feature' from this year where the cars were electronically slowed in the yellow zone.

Latest news from French media is that Bianchi is now under respiratory assistance, and will be operated on again during the night.

Oh no, oh no...

With the death of de Cesaris, this day starts to eerily remind me of 2011. October seems to be the black month for motorsports. And bad luck comes in threes (or at least twos). :(

Sky Sports confirm Bianchi is not breathing unaided, unfortunately, and remains in a critical condition following surgery. It has also been confirmed Bianchi hasn't undergone a second operation despite speculative reports to the contrary.

That's not unusual in these circumstances. It doesn't mean he's not capable of doing it himself, it's just aiding the body in recovery and minimising risk.
