Catalunya Info
Race Date: 11 May 2014
Circuit Name: Circuit de Catalunya
Number of Laps: 66
Circuit Length: 4.655 km
Race Distance: 307.104 km
Lap Record: 1:21.670 - K Raikkonen (2008)
The Formula One teams are no strangers to Barcelona's Circuit de Catalunya; not only have they raced there every year since 1991, they also conduct extensive testing at the venue.

Familiarity does not, however, lessen the challenge for car or driver. Barcelona's mix of high and low-speed corners, plus its abrasive and rather bumpy track surface, makes for a physically and mechanically taxing race. Tyre wear is particularly high and the varying winds that cut across the circuit mean an optimum set-up can be hard to find.

For spectators Elf corner is among the best places to watch, as it is one of the track's few overtaking opportunities. For the drivers it is the final two turns, known collectively as New Holland, which provide one of the biggest challenges of the season. A fast exit is essential in order to maximise speed down the start-finish straight into Elf.
Past winners:
2013 - F. Alonso (Ferrari)
2012 - P. Maldonado (Williams)
2011 - S. Vettel (Red Bull)
2010 - M. Webber (Red Bull)
2009 - J. Button (Brawn)
2008 - K. Raikkonen (Ferrari)
2007 - F. Massa (Ferrari)
2006 - F. Alonso (Renault)

Tyres: Hard and medium.

Ferrari will bring major upgrades to Barcelona: New front and read wings. Small sidepods. Software updates to the engines which could give them between 10 and 15 HP.

I can see Alonso fighting for the podium again

Horner said RBR need to beat Mercedes in Spain to have a shot at the title. Oh yeah

It's hard to see another team competing Mercedes for the win immedietly, the advantage they had in the first four race is huge, expect Redbull and Ferrari to be closer though .

Alonso now has more 5th place qualifyings than anyone else, with 31.
Hamilton now has the most pole positions by a British driver, beating Jim Clark, with 34.
Hamilton’s win in Shanghai was the first time he won 3 on the trot and his total of 25 equals that of Nikki Lauda.

Penalty points so far
Jules Bianchi 4
Pastor Maldonado 3
Valtteri Bottas 2
Kevin Magnussen 2

I expect Red Bull and Ferrari to be closer to the front this time with both the RB10 and the F14 T favoring fairly high-speed corners.

That said, the usual upgrade packages might have an unusually big impact this time due to the steep development curve under the new regulations. Remember how Ferrari gained an awful lot by Barcelona in 2009, the last year with big reg changes (was still unable to win, but became kind of a podium-contender).

According to the Italian "Lagazetta Dello Sport" , Ferrari won't bring huge upgrades to Spain as it prepares to introduce a " B " spec car at Monaco.
