Mercedes Motorsport boss Toto Wolff says preliminary talks have begun with Lewis Hamilton over a new long-term contract.

Hamilton joined Mercedes at the start of 2013 and still has 18 months left on his current deal.

Team-mate Nico Rosberg, whose contract was set to expire at the end of 2014, signed a new multi-year deal last week, which is set to tie him to Mercedes until the end of 2016.

Wolff confirmed that he is now keen to see the current driver pairing retained for several more years.

"We are already sitting together and negotiating with Lewis about a multi-year contract," he told Austrian newspaper Kronen Zeitung.

"Lewis is a fixed part of the team, and I would hope for a long time to come."

Wolff also praised Hamilton for his performance at the German Grand Prix, where the Brit raced to third place after starting from 20th on the grid due to a brake failure in qualifying.

"It feels like a 1-2 because considering where Lewis was coming from in P20, it was a magical drive," he said.

"He had a misunderstanding with Jenson [Button] that could have cost us the race. Personally I know he is a very competitive guy and he will never be satisfied with third but it felt like a very good performance from our side, with so much going on out on track and the need to convert his pit strategy."
