Sebastian Vettel says he is sure Ferrari has made progress at the Spanish Grand Prix, despite the squad slipping to its biggest deficit to Mercedes in 2015.

Vettel collected third position in Spain but finished the race 45 seconds behind victor Nico Rosberg.

Despite this deficit, Vettel believes that Ferrari has made gains, with the nature of the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya masking the progress.

"If you look at the gap in the race, it was the biggest so far so you might think it’s not good but we are confident we are going in the right direction," he said.

"We have to understand and find the reasons, either this track didn’t suit us or conditions suited Mercedes – it’s likely to be one of the two as we’ve been closer in recent races."

Vettel passed Lewis Hamilton for second at the start but was always aware that beating the Mercedes driver was an unlikely proposition.

"I thought it’d be tricky to keep him behind, obviously we were lucky with the first pit stop as we stayed ahead and reacted well," he said.

"Then they decided to pit very early and go for a three stop. We stayed out, [it was the] best option, unfortunately we had traffic and lost two or three seconds, which was enough time to lose the position.

"But you have to be fair and say they deserved to finish in front of us today, I’m confident we will be closer in two weeks’ time [in Monaco], we’ve done a step forward in terms of performance, [it] doesn’t show here but hopefully in the next races it will."
