Sebastian Vettel says he expects Ferrari to be comparatively closer to Mercedes than it was during qualifying for the Chinese Grand Prix.

Vettel will line-up on third on the grid at Shanghai after he posted the quickest non-Mercedes lap time during Saturday's qualifying session.

But his best lap was nine-tenths of a second slower than that achieved by Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton and Vettel anticipates that the gap will be closer in the race.

"I would have loved to be closer but you have to be realistic, both of them [Hamilton and Nico Rosberg] did a good job especially in Q3 but we can be reasonably happy, let’s not forget where we came from.

"[It] keeps confirming we have pace and it’s not just luck so it’s good for us

"We were hoping to be a bit closer but the gap was back to where it was in practice, for the race they are the favourites but maybe we can be a bit closer in race pace in general.

"We saved a set of Soft tyres so maybe that can help us tomorrow – we need to stay ahead of the cars behind first and then we can see. In terms of strategy it seems more straightforward than most years as the tyres don’t seem to be so stressed."
