Sebastian Vettel says he has 'enormous respect' for outgoing Red Bull team-mate Mark Webber and reckons that the gap between them is closer than many people think.

Vettel, who has won 11 races this season and secured his fourth world championship in India, has had on track battles with Webber, most notably in Turkey three years ago and in Malaysia earlier in 2013.

"We always shared respect especially on the track when we were fighting each other," Vettel said at a press conference at Red Bull Racing's headquarters in Milton Keynes.

"I don’t think it was lacking in respect. I think each one of us respected the other guy inside the car and his abilities. As team-mates for the last five years we have got to know each other very, very well; meaning I know his strengths and I know, not his weaknesses, but maybe the corners where I have a bit of an advantage and vice versa. It has always been very, very close - maybe closer than people remember. I appreciated that and therefore have enormous respect."

"You have to be honest as well though, we didn’t have the best of relationships on a personal level if you look back."

"But at the end of the day we were very, very successful for the team, winning four Constructors’ [championships] in a row and together we made sure we scored enough points for the team."

Vettel also added that there are plenty of big challenges ahead due to the new regulations that will come into force next season.

"Certainly for next year that's the biggest project with new regulations and engines, there's a lot of work to do."

"Within five years a lot of things change within a team, some people come and some people leave unfortunately but that's reality so there's always plenty of new challenges with the new regulations."
