Reigning world champion Sebastian Vettel says that Red Bull has never enjoyed the kind of dominance currently being enjoyed by Mercedes.

Vettel and Red Bull wrapped up both driver and constructors titles between 2010 and 2013 but the German insists that their dominance never reached the levels of current leaders Mercedes.

Mercedes has won every race from pole position in 2014 and has led every single racing lap.

"We’ve never been in that kind of position – it’s easy now to look back and say we dominated everything and it was easy, but the way I remember it is a little bit different to that," he said.

"We are five races into the season – I don’t think we ever started the season with five wins as a team. We had a different and strong finish last year but if you look at the races and the gaps, I think it’s a different story. We’ve been at the top the last couple of years, we know how it feels like and the sort of things you have to deal with, probably now they are in a similar position and they deserve it as they do the best job."

Vettel does not expect Mercedes's stranglehold on the 2014 season to be broken in Monaco this weekend.

"You have to respect that Mercedes has a strong package so they will be very strong here I guess – Nico [Rosberg] and Lewis [Hamilton] are very good around here so they will be the ones to beat but maybe we can be a bit closer," he said.

"Barcelona was a step in the right direction in terms of race pace; in qualifying they were quite far [in front] – so the target for sure is to put a very good qualifying because that’s more or less half of the job done."
