Reigning world champion Sebastian Vettel reckons a tyre gamble in Q2 aided him during the final shootout session during a wet qualifying hour at Spa Francorchamps in Belgium.

Vettel narrowly made it through in Q2 after opting to save a set of Intermediate tyres, which he consequently used in Q3 where he set the third fastest time, behind the dominant Mercedes pair of Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton.

"I think it would be nice to be further up but the gap was quite big, [the] best we could do today," he said.

"Q2 was tight for us as we stayed out on same set of tyres, [it] started to rain and we wanted to save that extra set for Q3. It was quite tight but I got the lap in the end and in Q3 [I] could use both set of tyres and [it] was obviously very tight behind Mercedes.

"[It was] tricky out there in low downforce especially through Eau Rouge but it was a good challenge - I had a few moments through there!"

Vettel admits that challenging Mercedes will be a difficult proposition but he is nonetheless optimistic of being closer to the championship leader than in recent events.

"We know that we are down on power, Mercedes can run more wing level and have a lot of power," he said.

"If we do that we are similar in the corners but a long way off on the straights. Hopefully tomorrow we will be closer to them than the last couple of races."
