Sebastian Vettel set the fastest time during first practice for the Indian Grand Prix.

Vettel, who has won both races in India, finished 0.188s ahead of team-mate Mark Webber.

Nico Rosberg was third, with Romain Grosjean in fourth and Lewis Hamilton fifth.

McLaren had both cars in the top 10, with Jenson Button in sixth and team-mate Sergio Perez in seventh.

Felipe Massa was eighth, while Nico Hulkenberg and Valtteri Bottas rounded out the top 10.

It was a difficult session for Ferrari's Fernando Alonso; the only man who can prevent Vettel from claiming the 2013 title suffered a gearbox problem and missed the final 20 minutes of running. Alonso ended the session down in 12th place.

There were no major dramas; Pastor Maldonado spun at turn six, while James Calado - substituting for Paul di Resta - lost the rear of his Force India at the penultimate corner.
