Sebastian Vettel set the quickest time during the final practice session for the Austrian Grand Prix before predicted rain swept in at the Red Bull Ring.
Vettel posted a time of 1:09.994 to edge out Mercedes rival Lewis Hamilton by just 0.017s, having clocked their best laps on the Prime tyres.
The drivers were set to complete runs on the Option tyres but Fernando Alonso stopped out on track with a transmission issue, bringing out the red flag.
Both Ferrari and Mercedes drivers lined up at the end of the pit lane on Options but as they did so the expecting rain arrived, leading the quartet to complete a slow lap as rain lashed the circuit.
Kimi Räikkönen, who skated through the gravel when the rain came, was third fastest, ahead of Sergio Pérez - who had a rim related tyre deflation early on - and Nico Rosberg.
Williams claimed sixth and seventh with Felipe Massa ahead of Valtteri Bottas, while Max Verstappen was eighth quickest.
Lotus drivers Pastor Maldonado and Romain Grosjean rounded out the top 10, ahead of Nico Hülkenberg and Marcus Ericsson.
Carlos Sainz Jr. was 13th fastest - and had a few moments during the closing stages in the wet - followed by Daniil Kvyat, Alonso, Daniel Ricciardo and Felipe Nasr.
Jenson Button was further adrift in 18th as he faces a sizeable grid drop, with Manor Marussia pair Will Stevens and Roberto Merhi completing the runners.
