Formula Three ace Max Verstappen has joined the Red Bull junior team, it has been announced.
Verstappen was present at the recent German Grand Prix and was believed to be in talks with both Mercedes and Red Bull.
The Dutch driver opted to join Red Bull's junior system.
"We are very pleased to announce that Max Verstappen has accepted our invitation to join the Red Bull Junior Team," read a statement.
"This is effective immediately and the 16-year-old Dutchman will continue his FIA Formula 3 European Championship campaign at the Nürburgring this weekend as a Red Bull Junior in the Van Amersfoort Racing team and additionally will compete at the Macau Grand Prix in November."
Verstappen made his debut in single seaters this season and currently sits in second position in the Formula Three European Championship standings, behind Lotus junior Esteban Ocon, having claimed seven wins in his first year of car racing.
Verstappen's father, Jos, raced in Formula 1 for several teams during the 1990s and early 2000s and claimed a couple of podiums for Benetton.
Verstappen joins Formula Renault 3.5 racers Carlos Sainz Jr and Pierre Gasly, as well as GP3 racer Alex Lynn, as a Red Bull junior.
