Max Verstappen joked that he will require the intervention of the Safety Car if he is to salvage points at the Canadian Grand Prix.

Verstappen will start from 19th position following a 15 place grid penalty - 10 positions for an engine change and five for hitting Romain Grosjean in Monaco.

As he cannot serve the entire penalty, he will be handed a 10 second time penalty in the race.

"I knew it was coming so you just deal with it and try and make the best of it," Verstappen said.

"Now I will have a 10 second penalty and for sure we will have to do some overtakes, hopefully a Safety Car will help a bit and try and see what we can do from there.

"Everything is possible but it will be hard to overtake on the straights, but hopefully our race pace is good."

Verstappen also said that the downforce levels in the STR10 have been compromised.

"Quite a lot, we basically took out the strength from our car and that makes it a bit difficult to drive but we improved it for sure in qualifying."
