Toro Rosso rookie Max Verstappen has been handed a five place grid penalty for the Canadian Grand Prix after he was judged to have caused a collision with Lotus' Romain Grosjean.

Verstappen started the race from ninth position but lost time at his first stop due to the right rear wheel not attaching properly.

Toro Rosso opted to pit Verstappen again and switch the Dutch driver to Option tyres, after which he passed team-mate Carlos Sainz Jr. and Williams' Valtteri Bottas.

Verstappen attempted to pass Romain Grosjean but clipped the Frenchman under braking for Sainte Devote and careered into the barriers.

Stewards deemed that Verstappen was at fault for the contact and awarded him the grid penalty, along with two points on his license.
