McLaren reserve driver Stoffel Vandoorne says he is encouraged by the progress made by his team since he last drove the MP4-29 in May.

Vandoorne received his second taste of Formula 1 machinery on the first day of the third in-season test at Silverstone and set the sixth quickest time.

"It was definitely good to be back in the car, done quite few laps today, not as many as we would have liked but anyway it was some good running, lots of aero work in the morning, development runs, bit of work in the tyres this afternoon so all in all a pretty good day," said the Belgian.

"I could feel progress, which is very encouraging. Obviously still some work to do but it’s good to see there is progress sand looking forward to seeing if there is progress next time I’m in the car.

"Just more general downforce," he said when asked about the main improvements.

Vandoorne added that racing in GP2 last weekend at Silverstone helped him prepare for his run in the MP4-29.

"It definitely helps all the time, in Barcelona I drove there the whole weekend before I did my first laps in a Formula 1 car," he said.

"So you’re already better prepared. Formula 1 was new to me in Barcelona but here I knew what to expect from the car. It’s only my second time in the car [though] so I still have to learn things.

"My job is to be as consistent as possible during the day, so the team got good data and can compare the things we are testing on the car."
