Valsecchi, Razia hope for F1 chance

Newly crowned GP2 champion and vice-champion Davide Valsecchi and Luiz Razia are hopeful that they can make the step up to Formula One.

Davide Valsecchi wrapped up the GP2 title in Saturday's Feature race, but so far he has not been linked with any Formula One team for 2013.

" In Italy they always say there is no Italian driver in Formula One, but before now who deserved it? Last year we finished second with [Luca] Filippi, which was fantastic but we were unlucky because it was second."

"The year before no Italian, and before there was Pantano, who was a great champion, but there was the story that he was in Formula One before, and the story that maybe he was too old, but this year there is another Italian champion".

With the departure of Jarno Trulli from Caterham pre-season, Italy has been left without a Formula One driver. Valsecchi tested for HRT in 2010 and drove for Team Lotus in free practice for the 2011 Malaysian Grand Prix and the Italian is now hoping to be given a chance.

"I really hope to have the chance, because at the moment we are strong enough to use it, so I really hope I will have a chance, and that I can show that I deserve to be there, that I'm ready and I'm strong enough to be there", he said.

Luiz Razia led the championship throughout the mid-season but a couple of poor races at Spa and Monza handed an eventual advantage to Valsecchi.

The Brazilian tested at Magny Cours for Force India in the young driver test recently, as he did for Virgin Racing in 2010 and Team Lotus in 2011, both times in Abu Dhabi.

Razia also drove for Team Lotus during free practice for the Chinese Grand Prix last season.

"2013 is a good opportunity for me to be in Formula One: I hope that the table moves a little bit on the drivers and can open some spots, so I can have a chance at a good team", he said.

"If it doesn't I still have to believe that I'm a driver that deserves to be at that level, because GP2 proved that I am a driver who can be in Formula One."
