With the 2011 season coming to an end this weekend at Interlagos, the teams are already finalizing their lineups for next year.

One of the drivers who has not found a seat yet is Nick Heidfeld. The German driver replaced injured Robert Kubica at Lotus Renault at the beginning of 2011, but he was later on dropped by the team in favour of Brazilian driver Bruno Senna. Heidfeld still fosters some hopes of remaining in F1 next season, but he admits he is also open to other options.

“I am not insisting on it and I can also imagine myself doing something different,” Heidfeld told German news agency DPA. “I hope I can offer my loyal fans some action soon,” he added.

According to German website Motorsport-total.com, rumours in the paddock report Nick Heidfeld could sign as third driver for Mercedes GP, position he has already held for most of the 2010 season. He would combine that role with a drive in DTM, also for the Stuttgart company.
