The family of Michael Schumacher say that they are overwhelmed by the support shown by fans on the occasion of his 45th birthday. Schumacher has been in a medically induced coma since a skiing accident at the Meribel resort in France on Sunday. Schumacher remains in a critical but stable condition in Grenoble hospital. Ferrari clubs from Italy and France gathered outside of the hospital on Friday and unfurled a giant Ferrari flag to show their support for the injured German. Over 200 fans joined […]
Gerard Lopez, the owner of the Lotus outfit, believes the vast majority of the teams in Formula One are struggling financially. Lotus' problems have had a high profile in 2013, as the Enstone based team thrived with a competitive car but tackled rumours it was struggling to pay its drivers, employees and suppliers. But the Russian website f1news.ru quoted Lopez as insisting: "For 80 per cent of the teams, their financial situation is no better than ours. "If half of those teams say they are […]
After spending his entire career to date with Force India, Adrian Sutil on Wednesday began his next F1 chapter. "Look who we found getting comfortable in his seat," the Swiss team Sauber said on Twitter, adding a photo of German Sutil, 30, at the wheel of the 2014 car. Sutil, who began his career in 2007 with Force India's former guise Spyker, was at Sauber's Hinwil headquarters for a seat fitting in the new C33, which has already passed the FIA's static and dynamic crash […]
Ferrari has confirmed that Antonio Spagnolo will be Kimi Raikkonen's race engineer in 2014. Raikkonen will return to Ferrari in 2014 and visited the team's factory in Maranello on Tuesday. Raikkonen was previously engineered by Chris Dyer and Andrea Stella; the latter now works as Fernando Alonso's race engineer. Spagnolo has worked as a chassis engineer on Alonso's car but will be promoted to work alongside Raikkonen as his race engineer. 'Today in Maranello, Raikkonen was on hand to meet [team principal] Stefano Domenicali and […]
Adrian Sutil says that he is aiming for podiums after switching to Sauber for the 2014 season. Sutil has been part of Force India since 2006, when he joined the team under its previous guise of Midland. He then remained with the squad through its transition into Spyker and then Force India, only missing out on a drive in 2012. Sutil has never finished on the podium in 109 starts in the sport, with his best finish coming at the 2009 Italian Grand Prix, when […]
German Adrian Sutil will drive for Sauber next season, the Formula One team said on Friday, replacing Nico Hulkenberg who moved in the opposite direction to Force India last week. "I am very happy we found common ground," the 30-year-old Sutil was quoted as saying on the Sauber website, adding he had "known for a while" where he wanted to drive but negotiations took a bit longer than planned. No details of the agreement were revealed. "After six good years driving for Force India, with […]
Fernando Alonso hopes F1 drivers have a bigger role to play next year, as the wave of radical new regulations hit the 2014 grid. This year, as Pirelli's heavily degrading tyres set the tone, drivers often had to take a back seat to full throttle as they nursed their cars through race strategies, at the beck and call of engineers' informed advice. But Ferrari's Alonso thinks the new rules for 2014, featuring the introduction of turbo V6s and fuel limitations, could play in favour of […]
Comments in which Mark Webber was highly critical of his former Red Bull colleagues have been removed from the Australian's official website. It has been no secret that Webber, who has left the world champion team and Formula One to lead a more relaxed life with Porsche, has been enduring strained relationships with bosses Christian Horner, Dr Helmut Marko and teammate Sebastian Vettel. Once very close friends and even sharing ownership of a GP3 team with the 40-year-old Briton, Webber admitted in the deleted comments […]
Esteban Gutierrez believes that his performances in the second half of the season prove that he deserves to remain in Formula 1 next season. Gutierrez made his debut for Sauber in 2013 and scored six points - all courtesy of a seventh place finish in the Japanese Grand Prix. The Mexican, whose future in Formula 1 is uncertain, reckons that he has performed at the expected level since the Singapore Grand Prix. "The bottom line is that I have big goals in F1 and I […]
Sergio Perez has confirmed that he will leave McLaren at the end of 2013, just 12 months after signing for the team. Perez, 23, joined McLaren from Sauber in place of Lewis Hamilton and is currently 12th in the championship with 35 points. It is expected that McLaren will replace Perez with Formula Renault 3.5 Series champion Kevin Magnussen. "I would like to thank McLaren for giving me the opportunity to be with them this season," Perez said in a statement posted on his website. […]
Lotus is poised to announce Heikki Kovalainen as the replacement for his surgery-bound countryman Kimi Raikkonen for the last two races of 2013. It emerged earlier that the Enstone based team, despite having last year's GP2 champion Davide Valsecchi as its reserve driver, had made an offer to Sauber's Nico Hulkenberg. Hulkenberg turned it down, but it was a clear sign that Italian Valsecchi was not in fact the obvious favourite for the role, as Lotus tries desperately to improve its position in the lucrative […]
