Hamilton sorry for Q3 error

Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton apologised after opting to abandon his final flying lap in Q3. Hamilton held provisional pole in changeable conditions but aborted his last lap as he felt he was unable to improve. But the final sector dried sufficiently for several of his rivals to improve their times, dropping Hamilton to sixth. "I made a mistake today and pulled out of the lap when I should have kept going," he said. "It was a tough qualifying with the changing conditions and we got […]

Brake failure scuppers Hamilton in Canada

Lewis Hamilton was left to rue a brake failure which pitched him out of the Canadian Grand Prix. Hamilton was running a couple of seconds behind Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg when both drivers began to slow with an MGU-K problem. While Rosberg was able to finish the race in second place, Hamilton suffered a brake failure and was forced to retire for the second time in 2014. "I did the best that I could out there today and felt like I was having a strong […]

Hamilton: I'm hungrier than Rosberg

Lewis Hamilton claims that he is hungrier than team-mate Nico Rosberg as the duo continue their battle for the 2014 title in Monaco. Hamilton, who has won the last four races, leads the title race by three points over his Mercedes team-mate after the opening five rounds of the year. "Let me tell you this: I come from a not-great place in Stevenage and lived on a couch in my dad’s apartment - and Nico grew up in Monaco with jets and hotels and boats […]

Rosberg reckons Mercedes's rivals closer than in Spain

Nico Rosberg says that Mercedes's rivals are closer in Monaco than they were two weeks ago in Spain. Mercedes has dominated the 2014 season with five successive pole positions and wins but the German reckons they will face more of a challenge this weekend. "That was a very good day," he said. "It seems that we are looking very quick here again, although our main competitors seems to be a little closer to us than in Barcelona. I still need to find my perfect set-up […]

Hamilton beats Rosberg in first practice

Championship leader Lewis Hamilton edged out Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg during the first practice session ahead of this weekend’s Monaco Grand Prix. Hamilton set a time of 1:18.271 to eclipse Rosberg by 0.032s, with Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo a quarter of a second behind in third place. Fernando Alonso was fourth while reigning world champion Sebastian Vettel completed the top five. Kimi Räikkönen finished the session in sixth place after surviving a spin at Sainte Devote, with compatriot Valtteri Bottas in seventh. Sergio Pérez, Kevin […]

Hamilton: I struggled to keep Rosberg behind

Lewis Hamilton has admitted that Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg was faster across the Spanish Grand Prix, despite the Brit claiming his fourth successive victory. Hamilton started the race from pole position and adopted an option-option-prime tyre strategy, compared to Rosberg's option-prime-option approach. Hamilton emerged from his final stop six seconds clear but his lead was cut drastically as he eventually came across the line just 0.6s ahead of Rosberg. "Getting my first race win here after trying for eight years is very difficult to put […]

Mercedes to test noise solution next week

Mercedes will evaluate the impact a modified tailpipe could have on noise emissions at next week's test in Spain. Reports earlier in the day suggested that a solution could be tested during free practice on Friday, but Mercedes insists that any potential changes will not be trialled until next week's two-day test at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. Criticism about the noise produced by the sport's 1.6 litre v6 power units has been a prominent feature of the 2014 season, with several race promoters speaking out […]

Hamilton not getting carried away

Lewis Hamilton has insisted that he is not getting carried away despite his recent dominance in Formula 1. Hamilton has claimed pole position for three of this season's four races and the Brit has won the most recent three events, in Malaysia, Bahrain and China respectively. But despite his form, Hamilton insists that he and Mercedes remain focused on continuing their current job. "Life is incredible at the moment," he said. "When you’re winning everything is great, but we’re trying to keep our heads down […]

Rosberg out to stop Hamilton's momentum

Championship leader Nico Rosberg says he needs to stop the current momentum that team-mate Lewis Hamilton has at this weekend's Spanish Grand Prix. Rosberg leads the title fight but has had to play second fiddle to Hamilton after the Brit won the previous three races. "Every weekend for sure [is important] but the momentum is on his side at the moment and I need to try and turn it around," said Rosberg, who started last year's race from pole position. "I’m here to win in […]

Wolff: Mercedes out to increase advantage

Toto Wolff has warned Mercedes's rivals that the championship leaders are out to increase their advantage at next weekend's Spanish Grand Prix. Mercedes has claimed every pole position and victory in 2014, with Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg completing three successive 1-2 results, as well as having led every racing lap. But Wolff insists that Mercedes is aiming to improve their current situation. "We are now four races into the 2014 season and hold a strong position in both Championships," said Wolff. "However, the first […]

Red Bull still the benchmark - Rosberg

Championship leader Nico Rosberg says that Red Bull remains the benchmark in 2014, despite the reigning champions sitting 97 points behind Mercedes after the opening four races of the year. Rosberg, who claimed victory in Australia, reckons Mercedes still needs to improve as a team if they are to maintain their current advantage. "Very recently Red Bull was still the benchmark and is still the benchmark as a team - I don't think it changes that quickly - so we need to be careful and […]

Hamilton: Mercedes still has work to do

Lewis Hamilton reckons Mercedes still has progress to make despite their dominant start to the 2014 season. Mercedes has been untouchable so far this year having claimed pole position and victory in all four races. But Hamilton, who has won the last three races, believes his W05 is still lacking in some areas compared to Red Bull's RB10. "We're not sitting comfortably that's for sure," he said. "We've got more work to do. "The Red Bull is very, very fast through the high-speed, which tells […]
