Booth returns to F1 with Toro Rosso

Toro Rosso has confirmed that John Booth will return to Formula 1 with the team in the role of Director of Racing. Booth oversaw Manor Motorsport's graduation into Formula 1 at the start of 2010 and remained with the team until the end of 2015. Booth, who has since set-up the Manor LMP2 outfit, will work with Toro Rosso on a consultancy basis, starting at this weekend's Russian Grand Prix. "It is a great honour to join such a well-established and competitive team as Toro […]

Horner: Red Bull driver situation 'healthy'

Red Bull team boss Christian Horner believes the level of talent within the outfit creates 'healthy' competition, amid speculation over Max Verstappen's future beyond the end of 2016. Verstappen, 18, has repeatedly been linked with a move away from Toro Rosso, ostensibly to senior team Red Bull, which currently fields Daniel Ricciardo and Daniil Kvyat. Red Bull also has Toro Rosso's Carlos Sainz Jr. under contract, while young driver Pierre Gasly will race in GP2 this season. "It is a nice situation to have," Horner […]

Toro Rosso bids to end Bahrain drought

Toro Rosso will mark 10 years since its Formula 1 debut this weekend in Bahrain but has yet to score a single point at the circuit. Toro Rosso joined the sport at the Bahrain Grand Prix in 2006, after Red Bull acquired Minardi the previous year, but has been unable to secure a top 10 finish at the Sakhir circuit. Vitantonio Liuzzi finished in 11th on the team's debut, a result repeated by Daniil Kvyat eight years later, and current drivers Max Verstappen and Carlos […]

Verstappen thrilled by best qualifying result

Max Verstappen will begin his second Formula 1 season from a career-high fifth on the grid in Australia, a result which he admitted exceeded expectations. Verstappen was a top 10 contender throughout Saturday's tweaked qualifying session and eventually wound up fifth, narrowly ahead of Williams' Felipe Massa. "It was a good qualifying session, especially after FP3, where I was struggling a bit with the car," he said. "We managed to turn it around and to be P5 – a career best – here in Melbourne […]

Verstappen encouraged by Toro Rosso reliability

Max Verstappen says that the reliability of the STR11 is a boon for the team as he concluded his pre-season testing programme in Spain on Thursday. Verstappen racked up 159 laps in Toro Rosso's 2016 car and finished in fourth overall as he continued the outfit's encouraging start to the year. Toro Rosso was best by reliability issues across the course of 2015 and the Dutch youngster believes the problems have been addressed. "We had a very good test, both last week and this one, […]

Toro Rosso expects 2016 podium challenge

Toro Rosso team boss Franz Tost says he expects the operation to claim a podium finish in 2016, as it bids to move up the Formula 1 grid. Toro Rosso has not finished on the podium since its sole rostrum finish in 2008, when Sebastian Vettel claimed victory in a rain-soaked Italian Grand Prix. Tost has challenged youngsters Max Verstappen and Carlos Sainz Jr., entering their second seasons in the sport, to score a podium this year. "I expect a successful 2016 season because we […]

Toro Rosso reveals 2016 race livery

Toro Rosso has officially unveiled the livery which will adorn its 2016 challenger, the STR11, after running with an interim scheme last week. The STR11 made its track debut during the first test at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya but Max Verstappen and Carlos Sainz Jr. ran with an all-blue scheme. Sainz Jr: Formula 1 can’t play with lives

Carlos Sainz Jr. is in a reflective mood as the first Formula 1 test reaches its end point at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. Sainz has enjoyed two constructive days in Toro Rosso’s new Ferrari-powered STR11 and racked up 161 laps of the Spanish Grand Prix venue the day before we meet, though any signs of potential fatigue are not visible. Sainz’s team-mate, Max Verstappen, is lapping in Faenza’s new machine; both drivers made their Formula 1 debuts in 2015 but it was the Dutchman who […]

Verstappen upbeat despite suffering puncture

Max Verstappen was upbeat about Toro Rosso's performance and reliability despite suffering a puncture during the final day of the opening test in Spain. Verstappen completed 110 laps in the STR11 and ended the day in fifth place, but had to return to the pits in the afternoon session when he suffered a left rear puncture in the final sector. Verstappen did well to retain control of his car at Turn 12, before recovering to the pit lane for fresh rubber. "I had a puncture […]

Sainz halted by suspected gearbox problem

Toro Rosso debuted its STR11 in an interim blue livery in Spain on Monday but Carlos Sainz Jr. was halted by a suspected gearbox problem. Sainz racked up 55 laps in his new car but sat out the latter stages of the afternoon session at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on an unusually quiet opening day of testing. "We were all obviously very much looking forward to today and it was a great achievement to drive out after not the easiest of winters," Sainz said, referring […]

Toro Rosso shows new car in interim scheme

Toro Rosso has taken the wraps off of its STR11 during pre-season testing at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. The Italian outfit finished seventh in the standings with the impressive rookie pairing of Max Verstappen and Carlos Sainz Jr., who are both set to tackle their second seasons in the sport. Toro Rosso caught the eye in 2015 with a competent chassis and the squad is hopeful of progress after switching from Renault to Ferrari power, albeit with a year-old engine from the Scuderia. The car […]

Verstappen content with another learning year

Toro Rosso driver Max Verstappen says he is content to spend another year with the outfit in order to continue his learning experience in Formula 1. Verstappen was one of the standout drivers of the 2015 campaign as he finished fourth in Hungary and Austin en-route to 12th in the standings during his rookie season in the sport. Verstappen will remain with Toro Rosso this year, alongside Carlos Sainz Jr., and believes he can make further progress. "I think it is good for one more […]
